Almanac Poetry: ‘Moths Replace Butterflies’ – Tommy Mallet

Moths Replace Butterflies

Moths replace butterflies,
as I’m raising the blockbuster, into an
emerging Milky Way.
A bat swoops by,
this slither of midnight black comes early,
catching a red wasp,

giving me these small, simple

I continue to split knotted wood
in silence,
stopping now and then,
to watch where it crossed
until the call of
a barn owl
puts an end to things.
