Almanac (Other) Sports – The Professional Women’s Hockey League

Over the years, I’ve written on a few subjects. I’ve got a new interest I’d like to share with the Almanac community as well as give updates on my other hobby horses.

Before extolling the virtues of women’s ice hockey let’s look at these other strange worlds I inhabit.

The World Baseball Classic is living up to its name. There have been some wonderful match ups. Our lads fought doggedly in the pool stage against the might of Japan and Korea at the infamous Tokyo Dome. While falling short both times and missing out on the knock-out stage, they played some great ball. Top draft pick Travis Bazzana announced his arrival with a couple of cracking hits.

As I write, the USA has beaten the Dominican Republic to reach the final. They await the winner of Venezuela and Italy. Yes that’s right, Italy! Not a renowned baseball nation but giving us plenty of that trademark flamboyance.

That flair is not restricted to the diamond either. The Azzurri have played some champagne rugby in the Six Nations. Their first ever win over the Poms was the highlight of their campaign.

The tournament wrapped on Sunday morning when the French secured a last minute win over those same hapless Poms to secure back to back titles. The Gallic flair on display was breathtaking.

Closer to home, Super Rugby Pacific is also providing entertainment. The Brumbies and Reds look like they could have real cracks.

Now onto my new fetish.

Women’s ice hockey is a magnificent spectacle. It’s slower than the men’s game, making if far easy to follow the puck and thereby know what the hell is going on. There is a real joie de vivre among the players that draws one into the contest.

The Professional Women’s Hockey League is only a few years old but already generating a buzz. Games are broadcast on YouTube so access is easy peasy. Do yourselves a favour and check it out.

Before I go, I must also state I don’t spend all my time on the fringes. I love footy and what the Roo boys did yesterday made me smile all day. With the next two being the Eagles and the Bombers we could be off to a flyer. No reason why we couldn’t beat the Blues after that either. Go the Kangas.

Here’s a taste of the PWHL with high;ights from last weekend’s Boston Fleet v Montreal Victorie clash:

About

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.
