Almanac Music: Vale – Jesse Colin Young

Perry Miller known professionally as Jesse Colin Young of The Youngbloods has passed away aged 83.

The Youngbloods had a huge world-wide hit with ‘Get Together’ in the late 60s early 70s featuring Young’s distinctive voice and guitar playing. This classic song reflected the mood of the people of the time and continues to be a standout song of peace and love.

After The Youngbloods broke up Young had a long and successful solo career.

I was fortunate to see Jesse Colin Young perform in SanFrancisco at the Hardly Bluegrass Festival a couple of years ago. I have always loved ‘Get Together’ and it was a tremendous privilege to hear him sing and play this great song.

Please enjoy this classic song by Jesse Colin Young and The Youngbloods below.

Thanks for this Col. Amazing how a song, long forgotten, can transport one back to being a kid again.
The moment of remembering makes me smile but sad at the same time.

  2. It is a great song and Jesse had a few. Great that you saw him in concert at HSB Colin, that’s pretty cool. Any standouts from that show, like finishing with Imagine and What’s Going On? Cheers

  3. Matt Gately says

Michael Hurley, a mate of Jesse Colin Young and the ‘godfather of freak folk’, died the other day.

I’d only just discovered him and his huge catalogue so can’t really say anything original/interesting other than that he was brilliantly odd.

Sweet Lucy from the 1976 album Have Moicy! made with a bunch of fellow folky eccentrics was my gateway drug. That led to stuff like Robbin’ Banks and What Made My Hamburger Disappear?

    Fantastic
