Almanac Music: Bob Dylan’s ‘Nashville Skyline’ Anniversary

On 9 April 1969, Bob Dylan released his 9th studio album Nashville Skyline continuing on with the country feel he developed in his previous recording, John Wesley Harding.

As with  John Wesley Harding, many fans found it difficult to accept the direction Dylan was heading with Nashville Skyline and the influence of country music on his career at that time, however as we now clearly see from the perspective of hindsight, Bob has always been his own man,  not one to remain welded too long to any particular genre but diverging into various directions and influences as they took his fancy.

Johnny Cash wrote the liner notes to Nashville Skyline for which he received a Grammy Award, and always was a huge supporter and defender of Dylan. It seems appropriate that Dylan was one of Cash’s special guests on the very first episode of the Johnny Cash Show.

From that show, recorded at the Ryman Theatre in Nashville, is one of my all time favourite Bob songs,  from Nashville Skyline, ‘I Threw It All Away’. Enjoy.

    I’ve been doing some deep dive (internet) research on Australian/New Zealand artists who have recorded cover versions of Dylan songs. So far I have 71 examples including two of ‘I Threw It All Away’:

    Trevor Lucas ~ Live at The Troubadour (recorded in 1982/released in 2010)
    The Black-Eyed Susans ~ Dedicated To The Ones I Love (2001)

    The only other cover song from Nashville Skyline that I have uncovered (so far) is;
    Lay Lady Lay ~ from Reg Livermore’s 1976 ‘Wonder Woman’ soundtrack.

    For the record, I recently discovered Phil Manning (original member of late 60’s/early 70’s Aussie band Chain) did a number of solo albums, including 1992 ‘Can’t Stop’. This has a nice cover of Dylan’s ‘Country Pie’ from .Nashville Skyline’.
