Footballer, cricketer, hockey player, businessman, fundraiser, husband, father, and now grandfather, Greg Brown OAM has done it all—and more! A humble man, yet someone who won’t take no for an answer in his pursuit of excellence. Browny is a living, breathing example of the old Australian adage: Get stuck in and have a go.
As a sportsman, Browny holds the distinction of being the only footballer/cricketer in Essendon’s history to win senior premierships (VCA 1963/64; V/AFL 1965). He also played a third sport, hockey. In business, Browny rose through the ranks at AMP to establish his own well-respected enterprise and set up a life for his children—Travis, Fraser and Kirilly. Family has always been number one for Browny. The enduring romance with his wife, Jill, was nothing short of a fairy tale.
In this book, he shares insights of his journey from a boy growing up on the outskirts of Melbourne who reached the ultimate highs in sport, to progression in business, leadership positions, and tireless charitable work over decades that helped raise more than $5 million for people in need. It is Browny’s hope that his story—told for the first time, and only on the urgings of his loved ones—will inspire you to chase your own dreams, no matter the obstacle.
He says: “My edict through life has been: Let’s work hard, and have a pile of fun while doing it. Do not take anything for granted. Make things happen. I’m proud I’ve done it my way, alongside so many people I love and admire—family, friends, teammates, work colleagues, and those I’ve met through my charitable work.”
