Almanac Local Footy: A good Weekend of Footy

It’s been a good weekend of footy, for this Tragic Don, Essendon weren’t playing so couldn’t be beaten. Thankfully the AFL in their wisdom, have decided that at this time of the year, teams have a week off and The Dons had this week off.  Good for the team and their long suffering supporters, a non loss is like a win!!!!!

But there are other footy teams are close to my heart and they all had good victories.

The Burgers otherwise known as Coburg won well against Werribee in the VFL. They had 28 scoring shots to 14, but only won by 14 points. They were clearly the better side on the day and if they had been wearing their goal kicking boots they would have won by a huge margin and improved their percentage. Coburg are tenth on the ladder, after a disappointing start to the season when they narrowly lost all their early games. They are close to the top eight and on recent form this stand alone club soon join it.

Coburg 9-19-73  d  Werribee 9-5-59

The Roy Boys in VAFA B were too good for Old Haileybury. They led all day but took their combined feet off the pedals in the last quarter and allowed their opponents to make their score look more respectable. Fitzroy are in 6th spot on the ladder and as the late Merv Williams used to say on TV Ringside, “they are like the boy with the barrow, they have the job in front of them”.

Fitzroy 13-11-89 d  Old Haileybury 10-5-65.

And now to MHSOB battling away in Division 2 of the VAFA. They gave Richmond Central AFC a good spanking on one of the prettiest ovals in Melbourne, Melbourne High School Football Oval. They led all day and were untroubled to win by 76 points. The Old Boys are now in fourth place and who knows, with a bit of luck could do a “Barnsley”* and start their long climb back up the Ammo divisions.

I couldn’t get to the Megaherts v Rockdogs game at Elsternwick Park on Sunday for Reclink, the first one I have missed for many years. Apparently the Rockdogs  came home with the goodies, but I’m sure everyone was a winner on the day.

So as far as I’m concerned it’s been a pretty good weekend of footy, four wins and a non loss.

*For those not in the know, Barnsley won promotion from League One to Championship in the English Football competition, this year.
