Almanac (Local) Cricket: Pomborneit CC Weekly Wrap

 

 

Pomborneit’s Division 1 cricketers have retained the Graham Hillman Memorial Shield with a 5-wicket win over Camperdown at SA Wright Oval on Saturday. The home team won the toss and elected to bat, making an explosive start with 62 runs in 9.4 overs before Lahiru Fernando struck, bowling fast-scoring Lakers opener Jye McLaughlin for 44. Camperdown worked hard to reach 2/108 before going on to lose 8 for 44 to be all out for 152 in the 38th over. After being hit around in his opening spell, Brad Hillman came back to take 4 wickets, ending with 4/40 from 10 overs. Lahiru Fernando (2/31 from 9 overs) and Gavin Reynolds (2/9 from 2.3 overs) were the other wicket takers, with the team also effecting two runouts. The Bulls had to work hard in the run chase, at one stage 5/100 before an unbeaten 53-run 6th wicket partnership between cousins Tim Place and Josh Place saw the win sealed in the 37th over. The Bulls were presented with the Hillman Shield, Brad Hillman awarded the Allan McKenzie medal for his efforts with the ball.

 

 

 

 

The Division 2 Bulls made it two wins in a row with a 51-run win at Boorcan. Batting first, Pomborneit made 8/175 from their 40 overs, with half centuries to Simon Tolland (54 from 71 balls) and Sam Whytcross (53 not out from 58 balls), Sam’s maiden fifty at senior level. Pomborneit restricted Boorcan to 9/124 in reply, three wickets each to impressive young opening bowler Max Rees and medium pacer Stephen Walters.

 

 

The Division 3 Bulls also made it two wins in a row with a tense 7-run win over Cobden at MCP Oval. Batting first, Pomborneit were dismissed for 131, Garry Riches with 32 and Stephen Hill with 29 the top scorers. Cobden chased hard but fell short, Tayla Reynolds (3/38 from 8 overs) led the attack, while skipper Aaron Van Es (2/7 from 5 overs) and Stephen Hill (2/6 from 7 overs) were miserly with the ball.

 

 

A huge day on Sunday with all five of Pomborneit’s female teams playing in three consecutive matches at MCP Oval in front of an excellent crowd. In the first game, the Pomborneit Under 13 girls bowled first against Irrewarra, the visitors making 8/124, Zoe Unwin leading the bowling with 3 wickets. In reply, Pomborneit made 86 to fall 38 runs short and have their first loss of the season. The next game was the Under 17 match between Pomborneit Gold and Pomborneit Maroon. Gold made 1/152, with Lucia Clarke, Neave Thompson and Isla Nolan all reaching the 30 retired mark, and Jada Mahony making 27. In reply Maroon made 4/56, Charlotte Richardson top scoring with 9 and Lucia Clarke taking 2 wickets for Gold. The day was finished off with Pomborneit Gold defeating Pomborneit Maroon in the senior game. Skipper Sam Coxon, Jess Moulden and Nellie Sadler all reached the 30 run retirement mark in Gold’s 3/176. In reply Maroon were dismissed for 43, Debra Reynolds and Kelly Reynolds making 10 apiece, with Nellie Sadler (3/9 off 3.1) and Sam Coxon (2/3 from 3) the best of Gold’s bowlers.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In Junior boys cricket, the Under 17 boys had a draw on Tuesday night, the game washed out after Irrewarra had made 5/154 off their 30 overs at MCP Oval, Josh Reynolds the best of the bowlers with 4/13 from 5 overs.

 

 

The Under 16 boys had their first win over Cobden in several years on Sunday in the match played at South Purrumbete. Cobden batted first and were restricted to 3/123 from their 35 overs, opening bowler Max Rees (0/7 from 6 overs) and spinners Josh Reynolds (2/15 from 6) and Fletcher Tolland (1/14 from 6) were particularly impressive. A strong batting effort from the Junior Bulls top order saw captain Fletcher Tolland make 50 retired from 44 balls, his opening partner George Sadler 34 from 42 balls and number three Josh Reynolds scoring 43 from 32 balls as Pomborneit finished on 9/167.

 

 

 

 

The Under 14 boys had a 46-run win over City United at Colac’s Eastern Reserve on Friday night, batting first making 7/128 on a good turf wicket. Charlotte Richardson top scored with 16 not out, with Miller Murphy (15 retired), Ollie Rahles-Rahbula (14 retired) and Hugo Saarikallio (13) the top scorers. In reply City United were bowled out for 82, Hugo Saarikallio, Jonty Richardson and Max Rahles-Rahbula taking 2 wickets each.
