Almanac Life: The mail must go through

THE MAIL MUST GO THROUGH
“I first met Bob around the time Geelong (2007) was taking hold of the footy world”.
“He was quite the The Mildura Dandy , dressed like the spiritual leader of an artistic movement.”
“He preferred pants and shoes of lemon, lime and orange.”
These are snippets from John Harms foreword to my memoirs A View From Fine Leg.
JTH christened me at that time as ‘Citrus’ Bob Utber, or ‘Citrus Bob’ and then just ‘Citrus.’
Not one for calling people by their nicknames, I have come to accept that this is who I am, and this is how it will be until I stop writing or doing guest appearances on Victoria’s ABC Statewide.
I realise it is now 20 years since my baptism with a two sugar cappuccino listening to the ABC Coodabeens with JTH on Grand Final Day.
Twenty years, golly a lot of water has flown down the Barwon since then carrying the 4 premiership cups won by The Pivotonians.
John and a country football stalwart brought me back to writing and I have never stopped. This includes seven books, with the seventh now on the high seas coming from Singapore. Yes, Singapore and despite the Treasurer, where can have a book printed for a third-of-the -cost if it is printed in Australia? I don’t know a rich author do you?
I have know idea how many stories I have written for The Footy Almanac* but my best one was my first introducing the ‘real Patrick Dangerfield’ who had been executed by the SA media before he pulled on a boot.
Sometimes you can’t help yourself.
Why am I filling you with past history?
Well today (Thursday ) I received a parcel from a third or fourth cousin, we are to still work out which, addressed to Citrus Bob Utber!
The first of its kind.
Since corresponding with another cousin I have found a whole new realm of Utbers’ all stemming from King Arthur of Camelot and his father Uther.
All of the above would never have happened if I hadn’t met JTH and catching up with old footy mate Paul Daffey.
For this I will be eternally grateful.

About Bob Utber
At 86 years of age Citrus Bob is doing what he has always done since growing up on a small farm at Lang Lang. Talking, watching and writing sport and in recent years writing books. He lives in Mildura with his very considerate wife (Jenny) and a groodle named 'Chloe on Flinders' and can be found at Deakin 27 every day.

Outstanding Citrus.
Keep writing.
