Almanac (Local) Cricket: Pomborneit CC Weekly Wrap

 

 

Pomborneit’s Division 1 team has had it’s first loss of the 2024/25 season, going down to Heytesbury/Princetown at Timboon. The home team won the toss and batted first and got off to a strong start, Tharaka Sendanayake taking the first wicket with the score on 70. Skipper Matt Bignell and Gavin Reynolds took 2 wickets each as the Storm racked up an impressive 5/240. Several of the Bulls batsmen got starts but couldn’t convert, no player making more than 30. Josh Place, playing his 100th senior game for Pomborneit, made a bright 17 off 19 balls before being caught and bowled. Despite the result, Josh’s milestone was celebrated back at Pomborneit later on Saturday night.

 

 

Pomborneit’s Division 2 team were part of a very historic day as sport made it’s return to South Purrumbete after an absence of 24 years. Hosting Cobden at the rejuvenated venue in front of a very large crowd by Division 2 standards, the Bulls skipper Matt Richardson won the toss and sent the visitors into bat. Junior player Max Rees had the honour of bowling the first ball on the newly laid wicket, and in the fifth over claimed the first wicket. A good contest ensued, Cobden posting 7/183 from their 40 overs. Max Rees, with 3/38 from 8 overs, and off-spinner Fletcher Tolland, who took 2/17 from 8 overs, were best with the ball for Pomborneit. The Bulls lost early wickets and were 3/41 before a 69 run partnership for the 4th wicket between Luke Reynolds and Simon Tolland saw the momentum swing before Tolland was dismissed for 32. Reynolds kept the innings going until he was dismissed for 90 from 87 balls with 18 runs still required. Isaac Cootesmith hit 2 boundaries and with Sam Whytcross batting well that duo saw the team over the line for a memorable win.

 

 

 

The Division 3 Bulls hosted Heytesbury/Princetown at MCP Oval, and batting first made 6/231 with Stephen Walters smashing an unbeaten 135. The Division 3 Bulls then restricted the visitors to 8/165 from their 40 overs, Walters rounding out a great game with 2/12 from 6 overs, Tayla Reynolds outstanding with the new ball, taking 2/28 from 8 overs, with a wicket each to Jimbo Reynolds and Patrick Spokes, which for junior player Spokes was his first wicket at senior level.

 

 

 

The Pomborneit Gold women batted first against Tomahawk Creek at Irrewillipe, and through a series of good partnerships made 2/167 from their 20 overs. Openers Tayla Reynolds (30 retired) and Neave Thompson (28 from 23 balls) got the team off to a great start, Jess Moulden continued the scoring with 31 from 27 balls, while Nellie Sadler (20 not out from 14 balls) and Rachel Dendle (22 not out from 18 balls) finished the innings off strongly. Skipper Sam Coxon took an early wicket before off-spinner Jess Moulden ripped through the home team’s lineup, taking 5/3 from 4 overs, her first ever 5 wicket haul. Tomahawk Creek batted their 20 overs, finishing at 7/51, a 116 run win to Pomborneit Gold.

 

 

 

 

The Pomborneit Maroon women hosted Carlisle River at MCP Oval, and were well beaten. Carlisle made 1/134 from their 20 overs, Isabella Wain taking the sole wicket for Maroon, who then were bowled out for 50 in 17 overs.

 

 

 

Pomborneit’s Under 17 Boys had a big win over West Warrion on Tuesday night, half centuries to co-captains Gavin Reynolds (52) and Ben Whytcross (50 retired) set up the junior Bulls score of 3/271, with a good team bowling effort in reply to bowl West Warrion out for 59.

 

 

 

Both Under 17 girls teams lost on Sunday, an unbeaten 42 to Neave Thompson for Pomborneit Gold the highlight.

 

 

 

Pomborneit’s Under 16 boys started their season with a 20 run loss to Bookaar at South Purrumbete on Sunday, George Sadler (36), Fletcher Tolland (32) and Levi Cootesmith (30) were the best with the bat, while Dermot Conheady took 2 wickets.

 

 

 

The Under 14 boys were well beaten by Irrewarra at CSC Oval on Friday night, Miller Murphy top scoring with 37.

 

 

Pomborneit’s Under 13 boys had a 15 run loss to Bookaar at Frederick St on Wednesday night, Bailey Fox top scoring with 30 not out for the junior Bulls.

 

 

 

Pomborneit’s Under 13 girls team started their season with a win on Sunday over Colac at CMTP Oval. Top scorers for the girls were Emily Reynolds (10), Marissa Whitehead (8) and Reagan Webb (7) in Pomborneit’s score of 2/98, Zoe Unwin and Scarlett Whitehead picking up 2 wickets each in Colac’s innings of 8/70.
