Almanac Life: Why is it so?
WHY IS IT SO?
One of the most popular shows ever on ABC was Julius Sumner Miller’s ‘Why Is It So’ which ran on the ABC between 1963 and 1986.
Those of us old enough will remember his poor old side kick Frank Bennett (I think) who was the butt of many of his experiments.
Today I feel like I am Frank Bennett.
Early last week I decided not to travel to Brisbane for the Third Test. Couple of reasons, (a) after Adelaide’s oppressive weather I did not want a couple of weeks in a row like that, (b) I would save some money even though I had free accommodation.
I thought I had made the right decision with glee when it poured rain at the Gabba and I could still watch New Zealand taking on the Poms in Hamilton.
By the way look out for ‘The Stoker’ next summer he has bowled a lot of overs in this match.
My good wife suggested she would like a Mars Bar if I was going up the street.
“Yes dear” I said knowing that meant I could buy my favourite Fry’s Peppermint Bars from the UK which were on sale as well.
Having purchased the said goodies I thought I was backing my gorgeous car out of the car park at the supermarket. Instead I was going forward.
Consequences?
I had done considerable amount of damage to the off-side of the car. Ring my insurance and was told that will be $900 excess!
That Mars Bar, (not filled with Sumner Millers Cadbury chocolate) now has a going rate of $903.75!
Meanwhile back at the ranch Day 2 in Brisbane and I was able to marvel at the brilliance of my favourite player ‘Jasper’ Bumrah. He does let the ball leave his hand at least two seconds later than other players. Head plays another master piece. Accipere Imperium personified and SPD gets the monkey of his back.
Over the ditch, Mitchell Santner a much underrated player, played a super knock of 76 and then took 3/7 to have the Kiwi’s in a great position to win. The only sad part was watching my second fave New Zealander Tim Southee continue to struggle to take wickets and Crawley hit him for four fours in his first over.
A wonderful career drawing to an end.
At the ranch the temperature has reached the high 30’s and probably will go over 40 by day’s end. A good batting average in any bodies language.
Today at 5.30 am I have walked Chloe, our dog, along the river front with many other people and it is already 32 degrees!
Day 3 of the Tests in Brisbane and Hamilton and the forecast for Mildura a mild 44 degrees. I will not venture out
Marvin Vaas did say to me in Adelaide “ see you on Day 4 in Brisbane” and my host in Brisbane the lovely Mrs Tribe saying “sorry you can’t make it”.
Knackers, why is it so?

About Bob Utber
At 84 years of age Citrus Bob is doing what he has always done since growing up on a small farm at Lang Lang. Talking, watching and writing sport and in recent years writing books. He lives in Mildura with his very considerate wife (Jenny) and a groodle named 'Chloe on Flinders' and can be found at Deakin 27 every day.

JONAH! Five minutes after my thoughts having gone to print “The Stoker” breaks down with a hamstring which know doubt will set him back for sometime. Meanwhile the great Kane Williamson hit a beautiful 150 plus to brings his average at Hamilton in 12 tests to around about 99.9. Meanwhile it is still raining in Brisbane where India are playing like a team that wants to go home. 4/48
God is sending you a message CB. The plagues of Egypt will be visited on Victoria if you are not at the cricket. Boiling weather; locusts; pestilence; lice; chariot crashes; Tim Pallas. If it rains the next 2 days and India escapes with a draw, we know who to blame.
Look forward to your Boxing Day report from the MCG – or the first born get it.
