Almanac History: How Tom Wills Shaped the Origins and Early Evolution of Australian Rules Football

Greg de Moore’s biography Tom Wills: His Spectacular Rise and Tragic Fall is one of the finest sports books published in Australia. It came out in 2008, to much acclaim. The Footy Almanac community was able to hear Greg speak about the book at a wonderful dinner around that time.

Greg is a man of mighty energy across a number of fields. He is a practising psychiatrist and an historian. Aware that there is always more to discover, he has continued to research the topics of significance to him, in both medicine and in sport. In sport, he is particularly interested in the emergence and development of Australian Rules football.

This paper, on the role of Wills in the evolution of football, first appeared in the International Journal of the History of Sport, which is where you can read it now.
