Almanac Footy: What should be the AFL Team of the Year 2025?

Oz Footy’s Senior Team of the Year 2025.

The Senior Team of the Year makes a bit of a change by adding extra run out of defence. Nick Vlastuin genuinely deserves his third consecutive TotY nomination. Not only is he the best intercept for his size, but is one of the best R50 players in the comp. Congrats to Caleb Serong, who also gets a triple and comes in picked as 1st rover for the second time. Witts gets a third nomination too, and for the last two years, with O’Brien is the best ruck duo going around. Some may wonder why one of the much improved Adelaide midfielders isn’t included, but as any expert knows, the more midfield rotations a team has, which is now Adelaide’s forte, the less any one midfielder stands out.

Below, are the last three teams of the year, 2025, 2024 & 2023.

The 2025 Team of the Year should be:

B: Vlastuin. Taylor, Collins

HB: L.Ryan, Keane, Ash

C: B.Smith, Rowell, Wanganeen-Milera

HF: B.Long, Cameron, Gunston

F: Higgins, Hogan, Elliott

R: Witts, Green, Serong

I: O’Brien, Holmes, Pickett, Liberatore

E: Worrell, Curtis, Zorko

About

It was 25 years ago that I began developing a model for analysing footy squad lists for the purpose of improving those lists into a premiership window. Since then, the model has been used to successfully predict premiership clubs and to improve either lop-sided or underdeveloped lists into premiership lists. Indeed, the model was used for an article that I had published as a double page spread in The Age 2005 Pre-Season magazine. Over the 25 years, I have analysed the annual lists of one particular club but have used it for other clubs upon request. It has always been on my bucket list to display the lists of all the clubs, using the model, which I've done since 2021 on my website - OzFootyListManager.com
