Almanac Footy: From amity to animus – How did Collingwood and Carlton come to hate each other so?

My mate, comedian and Bulldog banner man Danny McGinlay, has an intense dislike of the two teams who’ll be doing battle at the MCG this Thursday night, Collingwood and Carlton.

The intensity of that dislike is matched perhaps only by Danny’s acute love of sporting history. That love took him on a deep dive into how the bitter Carlton-Collingwood conflict came about.

As Danny reveals below (after explaining his own hatred), the two clubs began as almost best friends, before events turned the Carlton-Collingwood camaraderie into a bitter tale of bad blood.

Collingwood was cruising along on top of the ladder in 1974. in round 15 they ran into Carlton at Waverley. The Showponies proceeded to demolish the Magpies, in form they hadn’t displayed for the entire year. Collingwood only won 2 more games for the home and away season to finish fourth…

Carlton beat Collingwood in the finals in 1969, 1970 and 1973. Our mob finally got some revenge in 1978 when we knocked them out of the finals but the very next year, you guessed it, it was the Wayne Harmes grand final – Carlton over Collingwood by a very lucky five points. Opening round next year the Showies cheer squad banner read: “Collingwood, Bow to your Conqueror”.

In 1988, after 3 years in the wilderness, Collingwood finished second. They met Carlton in the qualifying final and the freebees from the Showponies’ mates in white were twice for Carlton than for Collingwood. Justin Madden dominated the ruck and the men in blue won easily by 6 goals. This was the last finals clash between Carlton and Collingwood as the following year the Showies missed the finals for four years straight. But Collingwood has since won 3 premierships to Carlton’s one so I guess that’s some consolation…

In 1992, after missing the finals for 4 years straight, Carlton put out a video called “The Gathering Storm”. They missed the finals!!! How arrogant was that!

Once again Collingwood faces the deadly foe. Win next Thursday and Carlton’s season is virtually over – 4 straight losses. Lose next Thursday and our aspirations to join Hawthorn and Brisbane in the penthouse are severely dented.

Given the track record of these arrogant Pastas I can’t see a win happening. But I am frantically keeping Sister Janet Mead’s song on rotation in my head, in the hope that another miracle will occur!
