Almanac Footy – AFLFA: Fans look forward to more ‘normal’ 2022

Footy fans are looking forward to a more ‘normal’ 2022 men’s season and the AFL Fans Association is urging as many as possible to attend games and support their teams when Round 1 starts this week.

After two pandemic interrupted seasons, AFLFA president Cheryl Critchley says most diehards are itching to get back to the footy on a regular basis. Some have already attended AFLW games.

The AFL has organised a Victorian Footy Festival and offered $22 adult general admission tickets (down from $27) to Round 1 men’s games in Melbourne for 22 hours. Some clubs are also offering prizes and incentives for members to attend games, and free membership upgrades.

Cheryl says an uninterrupted AFL season would be just the tonic we need after a tough two years.

“We are all hoping that footy will be back to ‘normal’ this season with bumper crowds where possible,” she says.

“The AFL and clubs have worked hard to get people back to the footy, particularly in Victoria where fans have seen few live men’s games for two years.

“Some have enjoyed AFLW games, which have a great vibe and a welcoming atmosphere, so hopefully that will translate into big crowds at the men’s games.

“Some fans told our AFLFA survey that they were now happy to watch on TV, but that was late last year and we hope any hesitance to attend has abated.

“We all want a successful 2022 season. How good will it be if our biggest concern this year is losing to an arch-rival?”

Cheryl says match-day incentives would also be gratefully received outside Victoria, as it can be expensive to attend AFL games in some states.

“With Adelaide Oval back to full capacity, it would be sensational to see it full again,” she says

“Hopefully the COVID-19 situation will improve in Western Australia so the 50 per cent crowd cap at Optus Stadium can be lifted sooner rather than later.”

Tomorrow the AFLFA will announce the winner of our competition to win a framed limited edition 2021 Mark Knight Melbourne premiership poster. We would also like to congratulate the winner of our first survey competition, Melbourne fan Ann-Maree Beitans.

Feedback from fans like Ann-Maree is vital in ensuring the health of our great game.
