Almanac Cricket: Cricket in The Sultanate of Oman

Muscat, Oman [Source: Flickr/Jasmine Halki]
Muscat Harbour, Oman, a few days ago.
My Omani guide recognised two tourists from Italy and their Italian speaking Indian guide (yes, that’s correct). We all exchanged pleasantries. I’m asked where I’m from.
The Indian guide is a cricket fan. We talk cricket, we nod, and he faces up. I walk away and mark out my bowling run (spin for safety, remembering an embarrassing previous incident in Turkey off the long run in front of a bus load of American tourists).
I shadow bowl, he plays a rather elegant cover drive – probably two runs, wouldn’t have reached the boundary.
The Italian tourists look totally bemused; our Omani guide even more so.
The Indian guide and I exchange a fist bump.
We understood.
