Almanac Books: ‘Stories for Harry & Ray’ – Michael Sexton

Michael Sexton has a new offering called Stories for Harry & Ray, a collection of yarns about sportspeople that has been gathered over many years of reporting.

The net has been cast wide with vicarious meetings with George Best, Muhammad Ali, Lance Armstrong, Don Bradman, Athol Rowan, Doug Nicholls, Jean Borotra, Ken Farmer and Ian Chappell.

The cover image is a teenage Neil Kerley as captain-coach of the outback team Koolymilka in the 1950s. The story of that time is in the book along with other glimpses of the Australian game as seen by Archie Roach, Willie Rioli, Grenville Dietrich, Neil Davies, Geof Motley & Neville Hayes, Gilbert McAdam, Peter Darley, John Wynne and Bob Quinn.

Other chapters feature Stefanos Tsitsipas discussing his Russian Grandfather at the Olympic Games, Kumar Sangakkara on Sri Lankan food and its significance, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar on eradicating polio in India, Barry Phillips-Moore explaining why his tennis racquet that was so lethal it was banned, David Hookes on how his district club took on the Australian Cricket Board on his behalf and Lionel Tennyson (the poet’s grandson) the only England cricket captain to learn the game in Australia.

The book is 256 pages and each chapter is illustrated.
