Almanac Books: History books indicating why sport matters

For many Almanackers, sports is an integral part of their lives whether as a competitor, casual participant, or observer. And as the Footy Almanac site indicates, our community is one which enjoys reading about sport. We are always on the look out for a new or next sporting book, or sports-related book to read whether about our preferred sporting choice or in a different field.

Celebrated academic and writer, Wray Vamplew, has written a piece for the Shepherd: Discover the best books website titled  The best history books to find out why sport matters and as the title suggests, lists a number of books that are history related with a sports perspective that many readers of our site may find interesting.

Wray Vamplew, who will be known to many Almanackers,  loves sport, and approaching his eightieth birthday still continues to play golf. He enjoys watching sport but prefers to spectate via television rather than being there. Wray is also the author of  Games People Played: A Global History of Sports. Reviews of the book by Almanackers can be read Here.

One of the books mentioned by Wray in his list is by Footy Almanac stalwart Roy Hay, and his award winning book,  Aboriginal People and Australian Football in the Nineteenth Century: They Did Not Come from Nowhere. That’s quite a rap! You can read a review of Roy’s book Here.

If you are looking for that next sporting book to get your head into and are uncertain what to choose, check out Wray’s piece for selections, his brief summary of each, and where to purchase the title.

  1. Thanks for this and the links back to Braham and Roy’s elegant reviews of Wray’s book. Must have missed them first time around. I will definitely seek it out.
Took some googling to convince me that Wray Vamplew was not a pseudonym! He has a post at the University of Stirling near Edinburgh in Scotland and the source of the River Forth. The Firth of Forth is the watery backdrop to many great golf courses. Only an hour’ drive from St Andrews where Cam Smith won the recent British Open golf. Lucky bastard (both of them).
