The Footy Almanac is delighted to bring to your attention news of the release of Jock Serong’s latest novel, Cherrywood.
‘One rainy Friday evening in the winter of 1993, a taxi swept through the streets of East Melbourne, on its way from the city to Richmond. That year was one of the few remaining when a great deal was known of the world, but not yet so much that the world had become over-known. Small gaps remained…’
Cherrywood tells two parallel stories. In 1916, we meet Thomas, a Scottish industrialist who finds himself halfway across the world in Melbourne, tasked with building a paddle steamer from European cherrywood. Flash forward to 1993, we encounter Martha, a lonely lawyer who stops in at a pub, The Cherrywood, to buy a bottle of wine, only to find herself falling for the bartender.
Launched at the Wheeler Centre this past Tuesday September 4, Serong’s novel ais hailed as ‘one of the most compelling and wonderfully bonkers novels of the year’ and ‘a glorious reconsideration of karma, of how the past is always with us, and why love can accommodate great change’. Looking forward to this book. One of Oz’s top authors, whose work I thoroughly enjoy.
I visited the Great Escape Bookshop in Aireys Inlet today after a terrific lunch at the wonderful Le Comptoir cafe.. Lo and behold Jock Serong was there signing a pile of ‘Cherrywood’ in preparation for a book talk. Had an enjoyable chat with a most gracious and eloquent Jock who signed my copy with a fab inscription. I’m looking forward to reading the book.
And, if you’re ever in Aireys Inlet check the bookshop out, it is one of the best smaller independent bookshops I’ve come across, and reason for me to make further visits down the coast.
