Almanac Biography: A request from Citrus Bob – who is the batsman?

Who is the taller batsman?

Citrus Bob Utber has forwarded the above  photo which has everyone stumped at the moment.

The little guy is Chris Kiernan (the subject of Bob’s next book) and the lanky guy has him and many others stumped.

A couple say ‘The Big Ship’ but this bloke is not that ‘big’ and was also an English player by the name of Waddington.

Bob has been told the background is the ‘G’. His research shows that Kiernan and Armstrong did share a couple of partnerships at the G.  Looking at many photos of TBS as a younger person the facial features look a bit different.

Bob’s one hope is either Almanackers K.Carroll or PJ Flynn who know everything cricket plus a couple of foreigners from Adelaide and Perth might be able to help him out.

  1. This intrigued me, Citrus.

So I studied a number of pics of the younger Armstrong, and I disagree –
I reckon it is indeed the Big Ship.

    Cheers

  2. John Harms says

I reckon it’s The Big Ship.

  3. Citrus Bob says

SMOKIE and JTH – Thank you for your thoughts and it is indeed a matter of conjecture ! The other school suggest it is one LESLIE CODY who played a few games for Victoria and opened the batting for Fitzroy. My research of Fitzroy and Victorian suggests that it could be Cody..
An eminent scholar of Victorian cricket thinks it is Cody! Not Flynn or Carroll

  4. No idea who he is, but would’ve put a sparkle in the eye of a German infantryman.

  5. Citrus Bob UTBER says

Ajc – have spoken to N.Balme about your comment. He said “leave him to me”. So look out!
