Almanac Baseball: Astros Win World Series

On the strange-looking Houston turf they call home, the Astros clinched Game 6 to become World Series champions for 2022. For the first three games, the Phillies looked like they were about to write their own fairytale ending. At 2-1 up and another two more home games, they were cock-a-hoop. However, starting with a combined no-hitter in Game 4, the Texans ground their opponents into the turf over the rest of the series. Some excellent clutch hitting backed up top-shelf pitching.

It was particularly special for their manager, Dusty Baker. He had the unenviable record of coaching the most games in the majors without a title. He’ll sleep a whole lot easier tonight.

The Phillies had a great postseason. They put the Padres to the sword in the NL pennant series. They looked every bit a championship side going into the Fall Classic. Ultimately, though, their pitching wasn’t quite up to standard. Their manager, Rob Thomson, had a lot of faith in their offense. Their Top 6 remained unchanged throughout the entire postseason, the longest streak in the history of the game.

For their part, the Astros came into this series looking like champions too. They swept the Yankees to win the pennant, backing up their sweep of the Mariners in the ALDS.

After only ten years in the American League, the Houston team has four pennants and two championships. Considering they toiled away in the National League for 51 years for just the solitary pennant, it is a remarkable achievement.

With barely enough time to take a breath, baseball fans now have the Australian Baseball League to look forward to, starting this Thursday. It will be great to have local stick to put the disappointment of the cancellation of last season behind us.

Ballparks around the country await. Get amongst it.

About

Grew up playing the rugby codes in suburban Sydney. Moved to Melbourne during the Carey era so becoming a Shinboner was the natural call. Still love the game they play in heaven. Took an interest in MLB a few years back and have become infatuated with America's pastime.
