AFLW Round 2 – Adelaide v St Kilda: Away and Home

Sometimes it is hard getting to the footy.  Whether it be to the ground, to the TV or the radio. With a full weekend of family activities, there were moments. Picking up my 2-year-old 15 minutes before the game and driving home as the pre-game chatter was happening at least got me ready.  I was depriving Emilia of her ‘Frozen’ CD moments in the car for my chance to hear the game.

As I fed her dinner, I had the iPhone pod in one ear, and while watching to the wonderful Australian animated children’s program ‘Bluey’ I was listening to my Saints girls and sponsored player, Darcy Guttridge run out.

I was hearing the noise and the crowd and footy happening as Emilia refused different offerings of food. As ‘Bluey’ learns another life lesson.  As I clean up leftovers and rejected bits and pieces and add them to the compost, the names of Darcy Guttridge, Georgie Petrakias, Courteney Munn, Ali Drennan ring in my ear.

I took Emilia’s toys into the front room where Fox footy awaited. I had already heard that Kate McCartney had taken the ball and bounced her way to the Saints first goal. (And a nomination for Goal of the Year.) I heard that Jess Sedunary got the Saints second against her old team. And Adelaide got their first through Stevie-Lee Thompson, putting on a show too but this is quickly answered by Caitlan Greiser. Chelsea Biddell bombs one from 40 and it dribbles through.

When I went to the front room at half-time, I had listened to a St Kilda group who were leading Adelaide and playing good pressure footy. With Emilia settled with Mimi’s old Polly Pocket toys, I watched the second half of the game unfold, and slip away.

It left me wondering if I was better off being superstitious and not watching the rest.  While I was doing other stuff, my Saints girls were winning.  The moment I sit down, Adelaide pull back into the game.  Stevie-Lee Thompson has the ball put in front of her and she goals easily for her second.

At least I get to watch what I think is the best bit of play in the Saints two weeks of AFLW footy.  Tarni White who has been massive in defence all day, once again moves the ball forward and passes in front of Kate Shierlaw. Kate McCarthey comes to her aid and passes to Rosie Dillon, who kicks over the top of Adelaide defence and finds Caitlan Greiser and Greiser gets her second goal.

I will relive these few moments.  Good passing. Great teamwork. And reward for effort.

It was all Adelaide after this though. We think that Georgia Patrikios goals, but umpire says it was touched on the line. More deflation throughout the last quarter as Adelaide pulled away.  Even though they lacked their biggest guns, their littler ones shone through. Caitlan Gould leveled the scores. Madison Newman got another, and you could tell it was all over for St Kilda.  Eloise Jones kicked one just before the siren and Adelaide run away with the game that was all St Kilda for three quarters.

It had looked as though Emilia was watching the footy early on, and she’d gone over to the screen to get a better look to the Saints women warming up.  But on closer checking, she’d seen the DVD cover of ‘Frozen’ and it wasn’t the footy which had captivated my well-behaved drafted granddaughter.

Game over, and probably season over for the St Kilda girls, as there were now strong top 3 teams in both conferences. Nevertheless, I see great improvement in play from the first game and will be there for the sold-out Marsh Series on Thursday night and St Kilda v Melbourne at Moorabbin on Friday night.
