About time the inevitable happened!

God knows why the season got underway this weekend!

Ludicrous and embarrassing decisions by the powers-that-be allowed Australia to be seen as a laughing stock, the world over. Where almost all major sporting events had been cancelled in most countries, the AFL and NRL chose to ignore the dire warnings from medical and scientific experts – for what?

As the first round of matches approached, I had no real interest. Didn’t bother watching Thursday and Friday night’s games, and as Saturday afternoon drew nearer, I really did ponder whether to just ignore the Swans v Adelaide game. ‘What was the point?’ I thought, ‘the season surely has to be cancelled sooner rather than later?’ At 4.30pm I pressed the record button on the Fox box. I’ll decide later. At 5pm, 70 odd years of Swans love got the better of me. Behind at quarter time, I turned off the tele. At 6pm, I gave in again.

For the next 90 minutes, my mind was coronavirus free! I was back to my old self: screaming, rejoicing, swearing, anxious, thumping the couch, throwing cushions, fast forwarding when Taylor Walker marked 50 metres from goal attempting to win them the game just before the siren, and finally, with heart racing, and sweat rolling down my face and neck, yelling with joy, I was celebrating our hard-fought 3-point win.

I knew then, or hoped anyway, that it would be the last bit of celebrating for some time.

Today, the announcement was made. Common sense has finally prevailed!

Go the Bloods.

I agree Jan. The men’s football should never have started and the women’s finals should not have been played either. Top level football is not sacrosanct.

I shared every emotion that you experienced Jan .
I too agree that the AFL season should have been postponed indefinitely. The decision by the AFL to play round one was a disgrace !

  3. Agreed Jan. The whole thing felt very hollow, pointless & dangerous. Like a video game. No tribe = no game.
