Group 1 racing in Victoria heads to The Valley tomorrow with the running of the time-honoured William Reid Stakes over 1200m to be run as Race 9 on the 11 race program. It’s been a good race for fillies/mares in recent times with star sprinter Imperatriz winning the last two editions of the race and September Run, Loving Gaby and Sunlight before that in the last six years. The great Black Caviar also won the race in 2011 and 2013.
Benedetta, Stretan Angel and She’s Bulletproof lead the charge tomorrow.
Best Bet of the weekend comes up at The Valley in Race 6, number 2 Shanwah for trainer Ciaron Maher and to be ridden here by Ethan Brown.
The son of Too Darn Hot has come a long way this preparation after being beaten at Warrnambool first up on New Year’s Eve over 1400m. He’s since strung three consecutive wins together, with the last two in town, and really showed his class last start when winning at Caulfield over 1800m. Ridden by Blake Shinn to all three wins he showed tactical speed last start and was too good for his rivals. The extra 240m here shouldn’t be a concern and with Ethan Brown riding from barrier 2 he should get the run of the race and go on his winning way.
It’s a huge day of racing in Sydney with five Group 1 races on the program up there and some of the best horse flesh in the country going around.
Best Value of the weekend comes up in Sydney and that’s Race 3 number 1 Athabascan. He had absolutely no luck last start at Randwick over 2000m and the extra 400m here suits him. He’s at each way odds and with clear running in the straight will be right in the finish.
Best Roughie of the weekend also comes up in Sydney, Race 7 number 11 Stefi Magnetica. The Group 1 winning 4-year-old mare had absolutely no luck last start when caught wide and the saddle shifted making it a tough ride for jockey, Zac Lloyd. She finished her last preparation with very good runs when unlucky behind Lake Forest in The Golden Eagle over this track and distance and was then beaten a little over 1 length by Mr Brightside in the Group 1 Cantala Stakes over 1600m at Flemington.
With a little luck in the run, she can be in the finish here at double figure odds in a very good race.
Happy punting and let me know your best of the weekend in the comments.
