2021 season is upon us (A Samuel Wells Cartoon Tribute)

As a football history enthusiast, I have recently been enjoying the cartoons by Samuel Wells, which he would produce in The Herald throughout the football season in the 50’s and 60’s. My favourite of his cartoons would be the ones he produced on the eve of each season, depicting all the teams striving to win the premiership cup.

I have tried to produce my own version of a ‘Wells Cartoon’, taking inspiration from many of his cartoons, using a mixture of vector art and digital manipulation. Therefore I present my 2021 season cartoon.

Things to look out for:

The Cat holding a walking stick (they are an old team)

A shiny new Bombers team with those players who left seen parachuting from the plane.

A 90’s style Patrick Cripps, wearing some of Carlton’s jewels (number 1 picks) on his hand.

A wedding ring has fallen from the Tiger.

The Hawk is holding a Tasmanian apple in one claw and a mobile phone in the other (Johnathon Patton).

The Kangaroos are fleeing a burning Tasmania.

The magpies have a rope attached to their leg, with the words Do Better written on it, will this be holding them back?

The swans have hamstring issues.

And the umpires are bringing more new rules to the game.
