WAFL Round 2: Well, that was interesting!

 

With some close games, COVID, good crowds and interesting results, the WAFL season has bounced off to a very good start.

 

Claremont was hit by the virus, forced to make 15 changes to their team and include eight first-game players for their home game against Subiaco. And they came from 19 points down at quarter time to win. Timm House kicked four goals for the Tigers.

 

East Fremantle kicked eight goals to two in the second half to run over Swan Districts who were forced to make five COVID related late changes.

 

West Coast were ok for a quarter but then got ragged against a well-organised South Fremantle. Zac Strom straightened up the Bulldogs in the second quarter and finished with three goals, Haiden Schloithe and grand final hero Toby McQuilkan also starred. Simpson Medal winner Greg Clarke did enough to ensure an AFL debut in round six.

 

At Rushton Park West Perth kicked seven goals to one in the first quarter but Peel steadied and in an entertaining game the result was in doubt until the final moments. Shane Nelson and Trent Manzone were classy and effective for the Falcons, Keegan Knott was a menace and kicked four goals while Luke Reilly kicked two goals on debut. Neil Erasmus was outstanding in the midfield for the Thunder, Jye Amiss kicked five goals and Josh Treacy four. NT recruit Wade Derksen caught the eye with an athletic display that included two goals and some good marks.

 

The late game on Sunday at Lathlain Park proved to be a winner for the WAFL with 4,500 turning up see East Perth thrash Perth. Angus Schumacher was the star for the Royals while Sebit Kuek and Tom Medhat each kicked four goals.

There’s a bit to like about round three with unbeaten teams South Fremantle and Claremont to meet; East Fremantle playing East Perth at Northampton (yes, the place that every second AFL player comes from); Subiaco heading towards three losses in a row against West Perth; and a double header at Lathlain with the AFL aligned teams meeting in the early game followed by Perth and Swan Districts.
