WAFL Round 2: It’s about the Demons

FreoRn21

There may be some who don’t have a soft spot for the Demons and wouldn’t like to see them in the finals for the first time since last century or the century before or whatever it is. Maybe someone still scarred by the grand finals of 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1976 for example. But most of us would like to see the poor buggers do something.

And so I found myself at home after a big drive following the South Fremantle-Perth game from Fremantle Oval on the WAFL app trying to gauge developments from the crowd noise. Scores were level late in the last quarter. Michael Bennell scored a goal for the Demons then the Bulldogs got four behinds in a row. Then a point to Perth. Then I heard the siren. Perth unbeaten after two rounds.

Perth 11.10 (76) South Fremantle 10.13 (73)

West Coast played Peel at Perth Stadium before the derby. The newcomers brought up their first win and Jake Waterman kicked five goals. Tom North was good again for Thunder.

West Coast 11.11 (77) Peel 6.14 (50)

East Perth also had their first win and Swan Districts their second narrow loss. Sharrod Wellingham kicked the sealer for the Royals

East Perth 7.14 (56) Swan Districts 7.6 (48)

Claremont journeyed to Joondalup and thrashed the Falcons scoring eight goals to one in the second half. Tom Lee kicked five goals for the Tigers and Alec Waterman got two in his emotional return to senior footy.

Claremont 14.4 (88) West Perth 4.8 (32)

East Fremantle didn’t score in the first quarter at home against Subiaco. They improved a bit after that but still went down by 45 points to the Lions who haven’t lost since the 2017 grand final. Ryan Borchet kicked four goals for the Subi and Luke Strnadica looked good for the Sharks.

Subiaco 13.12 (90) East Fremantle 7.3 (45)

With scoreboard duties leading me away from the WAFL this week I sent Perth fan Ken Ferguson to Fremantle Oval and he returned the artistic shots included here.

I went to Pinjarra where there’s a digital scoreboard that can go without comment (see photo); Mundijong that has one of my favourites and Forestdale and a scoreboard puzzle I’ll bring up soon on scoreboardpressure.com.
