WAFL goes Freo by Les Everett

Subiaco got some players back and beat Perth at Lathlain Park. Thanks to Channel 7 for the coverage.

The big news out of the WAFL this week is that the grand final will be played at Fremantle Oval. It’s a good decision. There’s every chance South Fremantle will be in it, Freo is the kind of place you can wander into after the game to celebrate and it’s walking distance from my place. These were the factors I considered before making the announcement.

South remains the only undefeated team after a strange win over Peel in round seven. The Bulldogs led 0.8 to nothing at quarter time and 1.10 to 2.3 at half time before pulling away from the Thunder who will not win a game this year.

West Perth and Claremont seem secure in the top four due to their good percentages, but the fight for fourth position is on… Perth lost to Subiaco on Saturday so the FIRST FINALS SPOT IN A HUNDRED YEARS OR SOMETHING headline is on hold… Subi and East Perth are both in a position to spoil the Demon party.

East Fremantle flew home to lose by five points to Claremont. The Sharks have lost their last three games by six, four and five points to teams currently in the top four.

Each game this week will have a big bearing on the composition of the top four.

You work it out…

  1. Very even WAFL comp this season. Good for football. I see even my Eagles have seen sense and are talking of getting rid of their feeder team (albeit for cost cutting reasons). Doh.
Swans were right with East Perth to 3/4 time but capitulated in the last quarter again. Subiaco is the only game all season we haven’t been competitive – and we have only the one win over cellar dweller Peel (sans Dockers). Games have been good to watch.
Freo Oval GF on a dry day will be great in the outer, but the lack of decent stands makes it difficult in the wet. Train service and plentiful excellent eating/drinking establishments make it a good day out.
What is the reason for the old stand being so far from the fence at a strange angle? Was the playing surface realigned at some stage?

I do enjoy these updates from the West. Thanks Les.
