The 2024 AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai

Grand Final day—
the clear blue sky
is part of the scent

Welcome to the annual celebration of Australian footy and haiku!

Calling all haiku poets from every nook and cranny on the planet to participate in the Annual AFL Grand Final Haiku Kukai for 2024. This has become a much loved event, now running for over a decade! The one day of the year when haiku poets, expert and novice, footy fan or critic, turn their Zen minds to the rip-roaring, white-knuckle ride of a footy match to produce a live haiku call of the AFL Grand Final.

This year, the grand final match up sees the Sydney Swans take on the Brisbane Lions (a replay of the 1899 VFL Grand Final between South Melbourne and Fitzroy) in a much anticipated clash at the home of football, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) on Saturday 28th September at 2.30 pm AEST.

It is a Facebook only event which you can join here. If you don’t have Facebook and are interested in getting involved, don’t worry, please feel free to write some haiku in the comments section below. They will be read I can assure you.

So, wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, whoever you are supporting, send us some haiku of your experience of watching the game. Whether you are inside the stadium, on your couch, bed, backyard, dunny or at the local pub (I’ll be sitting by the pool in Port Douglas) send us haiku throughout the game. This is a most unique grand final experience.

The event is open now and we will be accepting haiku all week in the lead-up to the game to capture some of the pre-game silliness. Happy haikuing and see you at the game!
