Ten Things I Learnt From Observing Sport Last Week
- When one decides to put forward “the best of …….” you can be assured that it will light a fire. It did for me and thanks to the many Knackers who had their “two bobs” worth.
- I saw one football team on Saturday night that could make a play for the premiership a la Footscray. The Saints are coming along nicely as we enter the straight.
- Richmond as usual fell at the first hurdle. Cut out their A Graders and there is not enough at the next level who can rise to the occasion. Mainly B -. Pathetic, sadly.
- Razor Ray Chamberlain continues to use the sharp edge and make some ridiculous decisions. He will cost a team the premiership one day.
- Kyrgios and Tomic are Australia’s biggest embarrassment in sport since our Olympic bid and Tennis Australia do not have the balls to do anything about it.
- BT et al continue to describe every kick and bounce of the footy. Don’t they know we have ears and eyes. Oh for the return of Dennis
- No 35 proved you don’t have to train for the week to play a top game of football.
- Trent Cotchin continues to be the umpire’s favourite or should that read Tribunal’s.
- If Rulebook does not win The Quill award there is something wrong with the judging panel headed of course by Troy Chaplin.
- The 10 most objectionable players in the AFL are as follows according to some “experts”(no explanation needed and they are not in any order Dips!)
Hayden Ballantyne (Freo)
Tom Papley (Syd)
Trent Cotchin (Rich)
Scott Thompson (NM)
Clayton Oliver (Melb)
Tomas Bugg (Melb)
Lindsay Thomas (NM)
Bernie Vince (Melb)
Heath Shaw (GWS)
Toby Greene (GWS)
It is not that they can’t play football but they get up the noses of many people.
About Bob Utber
At 84 years of age Citrus Bob is doing what he has always done since growing up on a small farm at Lang Lang. Talking, watching and writing sport and in recent years writing books. He lives in Mildura with his very considerate wife (Jenny) and a groodle named 'Chloe on Flinders' and can be found at Deakin 27 every day.
No Sam Mitchell on the list!
Not often that two North Melbourne players make a “best of” list, Citrus!
But you might be on to something there.
Lots of wisdom there CB. Left Luke Hodge off your list? There are always things left gently unsaid at obituary time.
As for 2 – Add Port Adelaide. Good blend of players. Well coached. Ryder!!! And I liked the Dixon/RGray twin targets up front. Stayed out of each other’s way and created space. I can see them running over the Cats and Crows in September.
Not much to say about the Dead Parrots.
Intersting that you have Ballantyne first.
I would add Mumford if he flattens another player without the ball.
Item 3. Agree, can T.Chaplin’s ghost on the field or physical presence in the coaching box be blamed for this, please?
Item 4. Agree 110%, should be doing the thirds.
Item 5. Agree. But did you mean the Soccer World Cup or Olympics? The WC must be a grand finalist?
Item 10. What’s the go, not a Port Adelaide player in sight?

Almost all the time i’d agree with the general sentiment about Razor Ray Chamberlain who seems to want to be the centre of attention. But last week he gave a 50 metre penalty against the team (i forget which one ) being deliberately slow giving the ball to the player who’d been awarded a free kick. I like that and would be happy to see more of it. It’s fair and it speeds the game up.
Thanks Citrus Bob cheque is in the mail and in all seriousness agree re the Saints yep tigers last few picked are way off the mark.Razor Ray absolutely putrid as for the two tennis morons they are in the class of Craplin. Will be interesting to see if PD or Zorko get the 3 votes come Brownlow night.
11 Lists are subjective thank you
One “expert’s” objectionable player is another “expert’s” hero.
Exactly , Paul Young. If the players being called thugs and dogs were in the team the name-callers support it would be a different story. Same as the people who call Hawthorn’s recent ascendancy “boring.”
Wouldn’t be boring if it was their club : then it’d be “deserved” and “exciting.” Part of the passion involved in being a one-eyed supporter, but still lacks logic.
