Seven degrees, fierce winds and lashing rain outside (great for the district) but warm and cosy inside the famous 130 year old Tanunda Club. Some keen local Queenslanders, and visitors. Great to watch with this crew, especially Rabbit in the Vineyard.
It was a superb display of mistake-free rugba league from the mighty Maroons. A big piece of Billy Slater in their performance and hence, by extension, a piece of two New South Welshmen: Craig Bellamy and Roy Masters.
The Storm have been so good for so long because the coach demands his charges pay attention to the basic skills of the game and to secure the ball. Then the opportunities will come for the geniuses (like Billy). Skill. Patience.
So I see a fair bit of Storm in that Queensland master class last night.
A superb sporting performance (and story).
Also, Prop by the Sea predicted this. I suspect we’ll hear more of that – from him.
What struck me about Queensland’s game last night was their discipline: no penalties conceded in the first half, and no silly ball-handling errors when trying to be too fancy. A very disciplined and professional performance.
Sorry I couldn’t be at The Club. Missed the whole game as I was in the air between Athens and Paris and only saw the result 3 hours later. There’s only one possible comment – QUEENSLANDER!
New legends created (Dearden, Munster) and shades of Gilly’s 1995 Nobodies.
Can’t wait for Prop’s take on it all.
I can only concur with JTH – the weather was definitely wet & windy Barossa winter – inside the Tanunda Club the fireplace was crackling, the lamb & rosemary sausages with mash was the perfect winter dinner option, and the local Gomersal red was excellent.
The game: what a series for Queensland! After a heavy home defeat at Lang Park in game 1, a stirring comeback in game two, then what we witnessed on Wednesday night at the Olympic Stadium in Sydney: a crowd of 83,000 left stunned as Queensland were up 20-0 at oranges. What a week for the captain, Munster. Steve Munster would have been looking down on the match with a big smile.
Where’s Tanunda? That’s in Queensland!
