Spoon the WAFL interest

WAFL round 16…

Tricky mathematics aside, the main interest left in the WAFL season is in who might take out the wooden spoon. A win by Peel in round 16 has put the spotlight on Perth who lost to another spoon contender South Fremantle. West Perth’s inability to win at home meant they couldn’t take a step towards fourth place and time is running out.

At Leederville East Perth kicked the first five goals, East Fremantle got to within three points at the last break and then the Royals broke free again. Craig Wulff and Brendan Lee were outstanding for East Perth and Fraser McInness kicked three goals. Rob Young kicked five goals for the Sharks and Bradd Dalziell had another big game in the midfield.

East Perth 14.20 (104) East Fremantle 11.10 (76)

Claremont scored 2.8 to a point in the first quarter against Peel at Rushton Park and lived to regret it. Peel controlled things for the next two quarters and hung on to win by two points. Michael Wood finally showed some of the form that attracted the Dockers and kicked four goals, Matt De Boer was probably the best player on the ground and Josh Ballard had another good game. Ryan Neates was Claremont’s best player and Trinity Handley kicked three goals.

Peel 11.8 (74) Claremont 9.18 (72)

It was hard to recall the last win for South Fremantle and Perth but they played out an interesting encounter at Lathlain Park with the Bulldogs holding on to win by two goals. Ben Saunders kicked six goals for South and Craig White and Tim Kelly were good players. Perth’s Mitch Morton kicked five goals and Nick Kane was a solid contributor.

South Fremantle 13.11 (89) Perth 10.17 (77)

At Joondalup Subiaco led all day with inaccuracy their main concern. Andrew McDougall had another good game along with fellow big man Clancy Wheeler. Jay Van Berlo was the best of the Falcons. West Perth have threatened to send a reserves team into the Foxtel Cup grand final because a fixturing change has been refused by the WAFL. A word of advice – don’t be stupid – the game against Williamstown will be the most important you play this year.

Subiaco 13.19 (97) West Perth 11.6 (72)

The ladder: East Perrth 48; Swan Districts 44; Subiaco 40; East Fremantle 36; West Perth 24; Claremont 20; South Fremantle 16; Perth 12;  Peel 12.

Next week: Claremont vs Swan Districts; East Perth vs Peel; Subiaco vs Perth. A promoter’s dream.
