Sheffield Shield 2013/14 – RIP

When was the last Shield match ?

When is the next one ?

Who is on top of the ladder ?

Does it matter how well any individuals perform in this comp ?

What is its place in the pathway to Test representation ?

What is Chris Rogers doing this weekend ?

  1. Mark – I thought about labelling your piece:
    “Swish Schwerdt’s Sheffield Shield Shame”.
    Sounded too Foghorn Leghorn.

  2. 1) 1914 – suspended due to war.
    2) When the troops come home.
    3) Santa Claus.
    4) Victor Trumper thought so.
    5) Historical.
    6) Equations, I would have thought.

To say I agree Swish is as much a understatement as Boz Moloney being a moron

  4. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

Or Boz Moroney being a molon

  5. Barry Nicholls says

The commercial imperative continues to hold sway. This season is a joke. How do you press claims for the team to South Africa? That’s right you can’t. Well not legitimately anyway.

  6. Swish, I was only looking at the fixture during the week hoping there’d be a game during “holiday” time…MCG has over a month still to wait.
Some of the blokes are padding up for enemy states in Futures League matches. Keep an eye on District team selections as you can get some unexpected bonuses.
And, Barry, it is almost laughable when “commentators” decry that no batsmen are “knocking the door down” with “sheer weight of runs” for a Test spot.
Still all this negativity is cancerous – aren’t you relishing the Dress-up Party?!

  7. Barry Nicholls says

Crio there is a saying, ‘ Too much time is wasted on bad TV’. I just made it up and agree wholeheartedly with it. Haven’t seen a ball of the Big Bash this year. It’s the concept I find difficult to accept, that the game is best served by T-20 dominating the first class season.

  8. Luke Reynolds says

Keep asking these questions Mark, they need to be asked.
Very much looking forward to the Day/Night Shield game at the MCG later in the season, Test and Shield cricket need it work well.

  9. Mark 'Swish' Schwerdt says

    Oh, there it is

  10. Malcolm Ashwood says

Thank goodness the shield comp is back and well done , Tom Cooper . I have found the selection of the , Vic side amazing all season picking so many so called all rounders who do a bit of both can not work out how both , Hastings and , Christian are both picked in the same side for one . The treatment of , D Hussey another bewildering to say the least .

  11. The “Bushrangers” have had success in short form cricket and thus have the players and philosophy to do well there and fail miserably under the demands of the first class game. Their recklessness/belief that batters must “dominate” has again been exposed v NSW. You reap what you sow.

  12. …yes, and well done SA – though I cannot be pleased for a side which props chucker Botha, a blight on cricket.
