September Dreams

Inspired by C. Judd – 3 Votes, “Where The Wild Things Are” by Maurice Sendak and in hope of dreams to come for my son.

That night William wore his footy jumper and had dreams of one kind,

and another.

That very night in William’s room a stadium grew, and grew,

and grew until the sky was spring blue and the walls had become a world of screaming supporters all around, an ocean of noise for William to float on,

in and out of packs,

down the members’ wing and to the Punt Road goal square.

When the premiership quarter came, the place where footy gods are made, the opposition and their supporters roared their terrible roar,

till William said “BE STILL!” and tamed them with his sublime skill

and stared into their yellow eyes until they lost the run of the ball.

“And now,” cried William, “let the comeback begin”

And with his mates he danced down the wings,

made magic with the ball and in packs stood tall.

And the opposition cried “Oh, please don’t make us go, it’s been a long winter so”

but William said “NO!”

And he grew strength, from a wave of noise from a champion’s goal and as he stole the ball with his magic hands and ran and ran

into an open goal,

he sailed back, on an ocean of noise, across the field of dreams, back into the night of his very own room

where he woke with footy in hands and a life of football dreams to be had.
