Sat’dy Footy – 3rd September, 2011

by Chris Riordan

Needless to say it is a big weekend in local footy with most leagues now in finals mode.

The Mornington Peninsula Nepean Football League, for example, has, like many others around the state, “deciders”  spread across the whole weekend. Most comps try to find “gated” grounds so they can charge admission and raise some revenue. For the MPNFL, Saturday is Elimination time in the Peninsula section, with Edi-Asp playing Seaford in the Seniors at Pines. The Casey-Cardinia division play their Qualifying final on the same day, with Berwick hosting Narre Warren. More details at www.mpnfl.vcfl.com.au

Week Two of the Western Border Football League finals are in Mt. Gambier over the weekend – on SA’s south-eastern edge! The WBFL’s region stretches from the South West district of Victoria across to the South East border zone of South Australia. The League’s ten member clubs are Casterton, East Gambier, Hamilton, Hamilton Imperials, Heywood, Millicent, North Gambier, Portland, South Gambier and West Gambier. Saturday’s semi is between West Gambier and Portland at the Blue Lake Sports Park. North and South Gambiers play the other semi at Malseed Park in “the Mount” on Sunday. http://www.sportingpulse.com/comp_info.cgi?a=FIXTURE&compID=142832&c=1-6209-0-0-0

Nearer Victoria’s north-west border, up in the Central Murray League, Kerang and Tyntynder meet at Nyah for the right to go straight to the Granny. Swan Hill and Koondrook-Barham fight for survival the next day at Lake Boga.

Down the Geelong Road, in the Bellarine Footry League, the semis are on this weekend in Drysdale, with Sat’dy’s battle between Geelong Amateurs and Queenscliff sure to drag a good crowd. Winner (Ammos favoured) is through and losers get the repercharge v Sunday’s victor out of Ocean Grove and Anglesea. For this league and others in that area, I recommend   http://www.footballgeelong.com.au/

Back in Melbourne’s ‘burbs, the EFL semis take place, again spread over the weekend. Sat’dy’s major semi is between Noble Park and Scoresby at Bayswater. Blackburn and Balwyn play their eliminator the next afternoon.

My local EDFL has had some dramatic flucs lately. Marby Pk are surging late and Abers faltered badly to drop out of contention. Both semis are on this Sat’dy, with Strathmore and Oak Park (@ Coburg) vying for a GF berth, the loser facing a daunting match against the winner of Marby and Greenvale (@ Keilor). Both will be ripper matches.

There are plenty of great games on everywhere. Soon enough it will all be over so get out and support local footy while you can.
