Round 8 – Sal’s remaining Preview: The Frenzy Continues

Pardon the interruption,

Here we go for the remainder of Round 8 plus a few suggestions for Caulfield.

Sloane Down ($2.80) vs Unhooked ($1.54)

The Crows get another crack at home taking on the Bombers – there were some reasonable signs last week as they put together some good passages.  Their issues though are deeper with only four players on the injury list but still register a victory.  They have a distinct lack of pace, the Bombers have an abundance although Hooker has joined their list on the sidelines.  Unless the Crows can reduce the game to a scrap the Bombers should run away with this one.

Kings of the West ($1.73) vs De Gone ($2.34)

The Eagles won the Derby to retain the title across the Nullabor, their test this week is the Pies who are weakened with the loss of De Goey for an extended period.  Both of these defenses are solid and stingy, the midfields are deep but the forward lines are different.  The Pies rely on speed while the Eagles are more reliant on the big boys Darling and Kennedy.  Reckon that give West Coast the edge here.

Trucking Along ($2.58) vs The Big O ($1.59)

The loss of Stefan Martin give Big Oscar a huge task in taking on Big Max.  There is a bit more for Brisbane to contend with as the Melbourne midfield starts to click and Christian Petracca extending his output across 4 quarters.  By the same token the likes of Neale and Zorko also present their share of challenges in the middle and a blessed with a bit more pace than the Demons had to contend with last week.  The Max Factor is huge advantage for Melbourne but just think Brisbane has a more complete spread of talent across the ground and can win this one.

Sonny Shines ($2.66) vs Cats ($1.58)

The Cats lose two of the trinity leaving Dangerfield to carry the load, has been doing it pretty well but missing Selwood will hurt.  They face Freo at home who could not handle West Coast last week, they will be happy to be hosting an interstate team this time.  Without Fyfe Sonny Walters has stepped into the breech.  Reckon if they can get a bit more out of their younger midfielders they can take this right up to the Cats and win.

Track Time

Caulfield hosts the final meeting of the season with the Jockeys and Trainers all but decided to Craig Williams and the Hayes Clan respectively.  This meeting hosts the last group race of the season as we start to look forward to the return of a few more handy types.  Looks like the track will finally get a fine day but wary again of Caulfield favouring the leaders.   The day opens with Tavidance (R1, #4) as a short priced favourite – it has climbed in the weights while No Say In It (R1, #3) has dropped back 1½ kg.  Reckon he might be a better punting prospect.  Will leave the second out as a wide 2yo affair.  The next is not much easier with a bunch of untrustworthy mares going around, PG Moody has Our Campana (R3, #1) going as the most trusted with a 6 from 13 record.  Persan (R4, #1) has plenty to carry but is in great form so happy to stick.  Tough in the next a couple at odds with fresh form are Modear (R5, #5) and Zoupino (R5, #9) but not sure I’d want to play.

We continue our quest to get a quaddie.  Want the track on the better side of soft if so,  happy to be with the West Australian Coming Around (R6, #10).

Race 7 – Bletchingly Stakes (G3, 1200m, WFA) is the feature and has attracted a great line up, Widgee Turf (3) returns and happy to make him top pick.  Jungle Edge (1) always gives his all probably wants it wetter, Viridine (4) is a Group 1 performer and Great Again (5) has an extraordinary record on soft ground.  Still left a couple I’d want running for me.

Selections – 3-4-5-1

Another tough one, reckon $3 is too short for Double You Tee (R8, #1) whose last win was last October.  Plenty of other non-winners in this lot though might just hope we survive in the quaddie.  We can wide and come home on Mystery Shot (R9, #1) gives the field 2½ kgs but is still undefeated.

Quaddie

Leg 1 – 3, 4, 5, 10, 11

Leg 2 – 1, 3, 4, 5, 6

Leg 3 – 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 13

Leg 4 – 1

Go Blues, Go The Shot

Cheers, Sal
