Round 6 – Port Adelaide v West Coast: Power break hoodoo for first win

Port Adelaide Power achieved a win on two fronts.

The most significant one was in opening its account for four premiership points.

The second was that the Power beat West Coast Eagles for the first time at Adelaide Oval and in a big way after a tardy start in which West Coast’s Jamie Cripps opened the scoring with the first goal of the game.

Port returned to somewhat of its 2020-21 brand of football to win 18.9 (117) to a paltry 4.9 (33).

Scores were even at quarter-time 1.2 (8) apiece before Port powered on 11 goals in a row with maligned-tall-duo of Todd Marshall and Jeremy Finlayson feasting with five goals each.

Brownlow Medallist Ollie Wines returned in a big way after his heart scare three weeks ago to be instrumental in the midfield.

What was refreshing to see was Connor Rozee continuing from his second-half midfield assertiveness against Carlton eight days ago to dominate at Adelaide Oval.

Rozee won this Anzac Day’s edition of the Peter Badcoe Medal with best afield figures of 31 disposals and eight clearances.

Wines had 33 and veteran Travis Boak 34.

Comeback kid Kane Farrell impressed following nine months out with a serious knee injury.

Farrell injected much-needed pace and scored a sublime goal after he intercepted a sloppy Shannon Hurn kick.

Under-siege Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley said the win was just a small step after a shocking 0-5 start to the season.

“We just need to continue to work and stay in the moment,” Hinkley said.

“We can’t get distracted,” Hinkley said.

“We haven’t been distracted even though we’ve had a few opportunities to get distracted by what’s going on.

“We have just got to stay in the moment and stay focused on how we can continually turn up and improve ourselves as players and coaches and staff and we’ll be OK.”

A massive test looms against in-form and 5-1 St Kilda in an expected wet-weather match in tropical Cairns this Saturday night.
