The Gabba

by Tony Scully

As usual I am expecting little joy from this experience: Who will stop Neale? How many will Daniher bag? Who will surprise me on the positive ledger? Who will not surprise me on the negative? Who will score goals for the Pies?

Out run our team with the Texan looking like one of the members of the Wacky Racers all he needs is a red helmet with white racing stripes!

First Quarter

Pies have an opportunity for first blood. Kreuger tackle should have been paid for dropping the ball. Umpire’s whistle…crickets!

Lions open with a quick goal to Lyon. Only one problem with that; Maynard got the shove of all time to be removed from the contest. Looks like the umps might need some Wacky Racers goggles as well.

Kreuger follows with a good crumbing goal. I like what I see so far.

It’s a shoot-out – Neale goals.

Pendles kick into the forward line ends up at Cox’ feet. Which way did it go, which way did it go?

Generally positive ball movement but delivery forward still a big problem.

Daniher goals from a quick rebound. Ominous 60m roost.

McGinness misses after DeGoey centre clearance

Quaynor applies good tackle pressure. Kreuger launches but lands hard. McGinness misses again.

Cox mises the simplest of marks. Straight through the hands for a Falcon! I firmly believe he can’t see.

Crisp getting plenty as usual. Lipinsky gets his first touch late in the quarter. Pendlebury shows how you get a forward to lead. Kick it to space in front so he has to sprint to get it. The Hyphen goals from that lesson.

Weak effort by Grundy attempting a spoil on Oscar. J Daics runs Rich down. Ball ping-ponging to no effect for either side.

Cameron free in front of goal for a major. Taylor Adams unsighted.

Gardner charges J Daics. Another goal to the Pies. Another missed mark by Cox resuls in a mark to McStay for a shot after the siren. Close, but no cigar.

Quarter time: Brisbane 3.2.20 collingwood 5.2.32

Second Quarter

Krueger misses a chance from the pocket. Moore misses a defensive mark

Pies defenders under siege. Ah Chee too tall for Sidey. One back to the Lions.

Chaos ball ends up in Daniher’s hands 20m directly in front. Goal.

Pies starting to look rushed. Scrimmage in front of Pies’ goal. Cox lets another two slip. I’m embarrassed for him.

Roughead sighted for the first time. Ineffective. Tragically, a goal ensues.

Neale has started to escape Pendles’ attention.

Roughead shanks a relieving kick. Baby Daics misses a marking chance. Ball ends up in Fort’s hands for another Brissy goal.

Bailey starting to get involved. Howe’s first blemish. Holding the man. Goal against.

Inside out kick Loeman to Bailey. Two in succession. Feels like they are breaking us down…

McGinness goals from a chaos entry. Pendles’ old legs get caught.

Cox holds a chest mark down back. Then gets rag-dolled in the ruck.

Daniher Dives. No free. Moore stands strong in the back pocket.

Pressure football, mistakes from both sides. Cox marking attempt ends up in Wilson’s hands for a good snap. Pies hanging in there.

Adams frustrated. High tackle against. Scully more frustrated

Half time: Brisbane 9.4.58 Collingwood 7.3.45

Third Quarter

Daniher poster. Pies stay alive. Rapid entry find Charlie Cameron. Deadeye.

Country music – we must be in Queensland!

Pies make a forward move. Repelled with a throw from Rich. Not paid.

Pendlebury silk to McGinness. Great kick from 50m.

Hyphen takes Pies’ first contested mark of the night.

Krueger shows his maniacal aggression. De Goey misses a snap for goal.

Daniher disposes of Roughy too easily. Goal.

Howe saves the day again with a punch to rob Daniher of another shot. Adams getting more of the ball

Another throw by Lions. Unpunished. Roughy marks in defence. Pies struggling to get past the middle

Pendles arm hooked by Andrews in front on contact in front of Pies’ goal. No free.

McGinness ball knocked out in a tackle. Umpire calls dropping! BS!

Goal to Brissy.

Lipinski nice pass to Krueger. Shank. One behind.

Moore marks. Cox marks. Amazing.

Pies best buildup ends up in Krueger’s mitts. Goal. Dare to dream?

Three quarter time: Brisbane 12.5.77 Collingwood 9.5.59

Final Quarter

C Cameron shows his skill. Ball ends up in Bailey’s hands for another Brisbane major.

Moore bombs long. Too long for Wilson. Lions repel.

Once again Pendles produces something from nothing. Moore infringed upon by Andrews and then awarded 50m for dissent. Moore goal.

Will Moore going forward be an ‘empty goal’ Ice Hockey attacking move. May well bite us on the bum.

Good McGinness tackle on Gardner results in De Goey running goal back to 11 point difference.

Another free to the Pies. Soft as butter. Cox gets a chance at goal. No cigar.

Madgen fists the ball to the boundary. Deliberate. No argument. Dumb play Daniher goals. 16 points.

McStay outplays Rough for another goal. 22 points

Crispy has a brain fade to to give away 50. Adams shanks another chance at a goal for Moore. De Goey gets a quick snap. 95 to 79.

Messy, fumbly footy from both sides. De Goey gets one from the boundary: 12 point game

Consolation goal to Moore on the siren. A seven point loss is far from our worst effort.

Wrap up:

I thought our smalls were serviceable and showed effort, our talls were sub-par. I excuse Roughy on his first game back.

That having been said I don’t believe Lions played anywhere near their potential.

Tony’s votes:

3: Crisp. Never stops trying, never stops running, creates overlaps. Incredible resilience. Occasional brain fade stops him being in the absolute elite circles

2: Pendles. So creative, so calm so accurate even at his tender old age

1: Howe. Just reads the ball to perfection. Repels more than anyone else in our backline. Great to have him back and fit

Honourable mention to the Daics brothers who combine so well and give us in-and-under and also to Krueger who did enough to hold his place.
