Round 22 – Essendon v Port Adelaide: Power shoot down Bombers

Essendon v Port Adelaide
4:40pm, Sunday August 14
Docklands
A seven-goal to nil second quarter propelled Port Adelaide Power to a 23.8.146 to 9.8.62 win against a hapless Essendon Bombers at Marvel Stadium.
The home side was better in the second half but the damage was done.
After a tight first quarter, Port powered away and basically did what it pleased as Jeremy Finlayson (two goals) essentially played as an extra midfielder in the ruck and he was magnificent from start to finish.
He continually won the ball despite losing the taps as Port Adelaide’s other midfielders Zak Butters (three goals), Ollie Wines and Travis Boak dominated.
Aliir Aliir thrashed Bomber goal-kicker Peter Wright in a game that was riddled with errors.
It typified a bottom-ten match but the visitor’s polish around the stoppages yielded goals.
Butters’ second quarter goal from a stoppage also showcased the Bombers’ lack of intensity around the contest.
Charlie Dixon’s one-handed gather of the football late in the final quarter ended with Mitch Georgiades’ third goal.
Hard-working mid-forward Sam Powell-Pepper booted four goals while creative Dan Houston had no problems in launching a 55-metre drop punt goal deep in the final term.
The Power take on cross-town rivals Adelaide Crows this Saturday night at Adelaide Oval with the winner to claim bragging rights over the preseason ahead of 2023.

Charlie Dixon always seems to play well against Essendon. Port were way too good. So good they’ve caused a ruckus in bomberland.Adds a cherry oin top.
One of the most disappointing games I’ve ever seen the Bombers play, They were flat footed, out muscled and simply were not good enough. How a team who until a couple of weeks ago were playing inspiring footy and appeared to finally have turned around a dismal season with good wins against some quality opposition. The dramatic turn around in their performance leaves many questions to be asked and answered. Having said that, the Power were impressive.
Colin, when you get “out muscled” by one of the light flyweights of the comp, you certainly have a problem. I felt a bit sorry for the supporters who remained to the bitter end, but admired them for it. Us Port folk can only hope that the same form continues next week against the Frootloops.
