Round 15 – Port Adelaide v Gold Coast: Power hang tough

Port Adelaide Power weathered a Gold Coast Suns surge to keep itself in the running for a finals berth.

A match saving tackle by Port’s Sam Powell-Pepper on Suns’ gun Touk Miller helped the Power to a thrilling 13.15 (93) to 13.13 (91) win at Adelaide Oval on Sunday night.

But Gold Coast pressed forward again and the hosts grimly held on in a classic match.

Port started strong powering to a 26-point lead before the rising Suns pegged back the lead and in fact took the advantage on the scoreboard in the second half.

Port Adelaide’s key forward Todd Marshall continued his emergence with four goals in a match-winning display while Connor Rozee danced his way to more Brownlow votes as his rise in midfield status continues.

Riley Bonner and Ryan Burton provided drive off halfback.

Port’s coach Ken Hinkley was a relieved man post game as he cast his eye on a tough road trip as the Power meet finals-bound Fremantle Dockers in the West.

Port will have established players in ruckman Scott Lycett, Orazio Fantasia, Zak Butters and Tom Clurey available for selection.

However in-form Bonner will miss a month with a fractured eye socket he suffered against Gold Coast.

“You can’t start thinking about anything other than just trying to win every game,” Hinkley said of the teams ‘stay in the moment mantra’.

“The competition will throw up plenty of strange things over the next eight weeks.

“We’ve got really strong form, but we have to continue to focus on next week and we will.”
