Round 12 – Hawthorn v Collingwood: Floreat Pica Society Report

Hawthorn v Collingwood
2:10pm, Sunday, June 5
MCG
by Paul McKay
It is a cold day at Jolimont, and with rain in the forecast, we are about to see whether we have earned the title of a good wet weather team, after the thumping win at Optus against Freo in the wet two weeks ago. Spectators have brought along their clear plastic raincoats and the coaches are in their puffer jackets.
First quarter
Ginnivan is getting under the skin of a few Hawthorn defenders early, the ball spends a lot of time up forward, and Cameron gets our first point. Lipinski takes a nice one hander, Quaynor and Noble are amongst it early and we are looking sharp. Jack G gets a free on the 50m line and he kicks a very impressive long goal. Chad Wingard kicks a point after a strange out on the full by Howe on the last line of defence. Nick Daicos is getting a lot of the ball. Hawks get a quick coast to coast and the camera pans to the vast cracks of Jeff Kennett’s face. He is sitting next to Eddie Maguire. What exactly are they discussing?
Darcy Cameron corrects his earlier miss with a cool set shot after a well crafted move involving N Daicos, Pendles, and de Goey. Murphy strong mark, cutting off a fast Hawks forward move. Some umpire confusion has one over-riding another, and Jack G gets a free from a push, then some umpire dissent from the far south of Italy gives us a 50m penalty and Jack kicks it from the goal square. Another inside 50, thanks to a long kick from a Texan in wrap-around sunglasses, sees it with Steele and a nice swinging left foot goal results. We have a 21 point lead. Mitch Lewis sees a hole in our defence. Mark and goal to the Hawks. Adams and Crisp combined superbly and it could have been a Lipinski goal, but it went wide. Great juggling mark by Darcy Moore on the wing and it’s back in our forward line. Maynard gives Checkers a lend of his back for a potential ‘almost mark’ of the year candidate, it spills to McCreery and we have five. 5.4 to 2.2…a healthy 20 point lead at quarter time, and the big man Damian Monkhorst is seen strategizing at the Hawthorn huddle during the break.
Second quarter
Plenty of back and forth in the first minutes of the second; not so exciting. Jiath kicks a long goal for the Hawks and then a running goal to Lipinski sees us 22 points ahead. IQ takes a hanger on the wing, brings it down to de Goey who misses a straight forward set shot. His sly grin cannot hide his disappointment. Ginnivan and Cox play basketball on the forward flank, it comes to another basketballer in Pendles, to the hyphen, over the top to Checkers, goal. The ease of this movement forces Sam Mitchell’s head into his hands. Our lead is now out to 30 points and the skies are darkening. Taylor Adams has a nice patch here, Crispy Jack had his head ripped off, no free, and then the lanky Texan lays a great tackle, in the midfield, proving that he is actually quite fast over the first three metres. He tries the same tackle in the next ruck contest and is penalised. Not happy! Mitch Lewis snaps a running goal for the Hawks, back to a 24 point lead. McCreery somehow hits the wrong side of the banana, it loops over to Checkers in the other pocket, and he fluffs his round the corner kick. Fortunately Breust is missing at the other end and the spectacle meter reading on this game has dropped significantly. Chance of a last minute goal goes begging after Checkers cannot hold the mark. There’s the bell and we take a 23 point lead into the main break.
Third quarter
The rain has come. The 23 point lead would appear to be a big one, but alas, the momentum is about to shift. Koschitzke gets a perfectly clean tap out to Mitchell and the result is a goal to the Hawks within a minute. This all happens immediately after the commentators are talking up the Pies after our great win in the wet at Perth. Breust somehow plucks a wet ball from the pack and goals. Our back line are suddenly under the pump. More goals to the Hawks via Mitch Lewis and then Butler falls over Darcy Moore in the goal square and the furthest umpire from the contest sees a ‘taking the legs out’ free kick. Unbelievable. This gives the Hawks the lead. We cannot hit the scoreboard and ‘Slip Sliding Away’ from Simon & Garfunkel starts ringing in my head. McInnes raking in the one hander must be the mark of the day. De Goey has a chance in the pack; missed. Nick Daicos is shining in the wet. WHE is going for kicks off the deck and they are not working. Jiath gets Jack G around the neck, and three umpires ignore it. McInnes dislocates his shoulder in a contest. Crisp finds Ollie on his own and a goal after the siren puts us five points up at the siren.
Final quarter
The rain continues to come, and so do the Hawks. Quick goals to Lewis and Wingard and the Hawks are back in the lead. The ball spends a lot of time in the Hawthorn forward line, yet fortunately they are now kicking points. Newcombe missed what could have made it very tough for the Pies. Wingard also misses an easy snap on his left foot. Checkers collects cleanly on the flank, finds De Goey on the 50m line, and he kicks a nice long set shot with a wet pill, and the ball scrapes past the post for a goal. The ball is back our forward line and the umpires have officially put away their whistle on Ginnivan high tackles. Three times he was taken around the chin in this quarter, yet no frees. Darcy Cameron takes a timely mark and puts it deep into the forward line where Oliver Henry takes a great mark in front of the pack. His set shot has a chance to give us back the lead, but it leans left. We keep the ball in our forward line after the kick out and J Daicos gets a slippery ball to drop into Henry’s lap. This time he nails it. Great composure young lad. Four points up and five minutes left on the clock and it’s tight. Kick to kick in the wet for the last few minutes, some critical marks from Noble, Moore, and we take a memorable win.
Shiels and Breust are chaired off, Ginnivan is charming babies and their parents in the crowd and all is good at the ‘G. Three wins in a row against quality opposition in tough conditions. What would we give to make it four?
The Votes:
- John Noble: worked hard all night, his skills & delivery have improved 100% since last year and tonight he was holding strong marks at the right time.
- Isaac Quaynor: finds space, took key intercepts at the right moments, and hitting targets.
- Nick Daicos: 36 possessions, a four quarter effort. Sublime skills in wet conditions.
We are in the eight!
But what a task next week – we face the wounded Dees after their two consecutive losses.
There is only one way to approach that task…give them three!
Go Pies!
Cheers everyone,
