Round 10 – Fremantle v Collingwood: Pies revel in wet weather footy

1st Quarter
Pre-game was torrential rain and everyone was soaked as we entered the ground. Mason Cox wearing his sunglasses led to much mirth, and the big fella started in the ruck for the first bounce. The ground is totally soaked, with visible puddles everywhere. Fremantle are wearing the Michael Walters designed Heritage jumper, and the game is an old fashioned wet footy game. Collingwood start well with plenty of pressure applied, a trend that continued all day. There is continued use of soccering off the ground, tap ons and efforts to just get the ball forward. Ginnivan gets the ball to Noble somehow, ’cause it certainly wasn’t a handball, which leads to Cameron taking a good grab and kicking straight, an important skill on a day like this. De Goey does a great gather on the wing, followed by a 25-metre handball that few others would be able to execute. Crisp bounce early that didn’t bounce was an interesting decision, but the second goal was an example of how good a footy we can play. Nathan Murphy receives a great bump from Angus Bradshaw, again showing his willingness to put his body on the line, a trait all Collingwood players are showing. Several probing kicks led to Mihocek soccering one through from the edge of the goal-square, Hoskin-Elliott kicks to perfection to give him the best chance of a goal. Cox has removed the sunnies by half way of the quarter.
Quarter time 2.2 each
All round, great start with De Goey, Crisp, Cameron Howe all featuring. Everyone is contributing, and the question is – can we do this for four quarters?
2nd Quarter
The Pies continue to play wet weather footy, playing in front all game, which leads to many important possessions. Several times it leads to almost lucky falls of the ball, but we were putting ourselves in good spots so it’s a tick to the players and the coaching group. Our first goal is an example of this, Elliott soccering from the pocket leads to Mihocek soccering from the square. Brody knows how to sniff out a goal and this was another example of this skill. Cox goes off with a finger injury, leading to one of the most influential subs coming on. Oliver Henry comes on, has a great game that sees him suddenly become a one-touch footballer. The kid can play. Tyler Brown goes into the ruck on occasions, and his game is the best I’ve seen him produce in the black and white stripes. Hoskin-Elliott marks and goal, and again, he is contributing nicely. Ginnivan goals after another high tackle, something he is able to encourage in defenders that is handy in his role. Good kick around the body leads to a half time score of 5.3 (33) to 2.4 (16). Excellent first half. Bradshaw mentions in half time interview that we wanted it more…and a truer word has never been spoken…than death and taxes.
Anyway, 3rd Quarter
Scrappy start but the first goal comes from a nice hang by The Hypthen. Interesting player; when he is a regular contributor we are a better side, but it doesn’t always happen. Will Brodie snaps Freo’s first in over a quarter and half, which is a credit to a backline with Magden, again, maybe a good thing. Henry kicks his first after good mark and good kick at goal, something that is the final straw to the bow in his game. Howe produces another screamer right in front of us; not his best but he’s a joy to watch and one of the best on the day.
By end of quarter, we’ve established a 7.4 (46) to 3.6 (24) lead. Throw Lipinski, Adams, Crisp, Moore, Sidebottom and Howe into the best player player category. Brown’s been good, Cameron good, and if these two can keep doing this week in, week out. Elliott good on return, Skipper good on return.
4th Quarter
Walters scores an early goal which gives Freo hope. It stemmed from an out-of-bounds decision which was good. Moore got pinged early in the first, but the umpires had been consistent the whole game through, and they deserve applause for this. Our next goal is beautiful. Pressure on the wing forces a turnover, McCreery providing an excellent pass, a skill he has that sees him not requiring truck loads of possession to have an effect, leading to a Henry mark and goal. Centimetre perfect. Henry just has a day out from here, next a grab from a somewhat misdirected kick from older Daics. Ginnivan finishes another nice bit of quick ball movement and good ball use, sauntering into the goal-square and launches a torpedo into the top tier. John Noble produced an incredible 20 seconds of football earlier. Tackling first, smother second and then a fantastic spoil being part of another good game from him and he was solid. Mundy goals to make it 29 points which 11 minutes left. Doable. Henry and Crisp kick the next two and put the cue in the rack – game over. A late Bradshaw goal means a final margin of six goals; a 5 – 5 record that’s unexpected and very enjoyable. Good side to watch and seem to possess a mixture of flair, determination and skill. Our pressure and attack on the ball were outstanding, and if the players buy into this style then we could be a very good side. Go The Pies!
Votes
3 Jack Crisp.
Really love watching this guy’s play. Enjoys his footy, his pace leads to good opportunities when linking up in the midfield. With a B & F behind him and another approaching, he could end up as one of our greats.
2 Ollie Henry
Awesome to see. Involved from the moment he come on the ground, was clean with ball and took some good grabs. Big future and gives us a great forward line.
1 Taylor Adams
This was a tough call and finally decided on Ta Ta. He is the best man to lead this pressure style of football into the future, and his work effort is faultless.
