Round 1 – Melbourne v Port Adelaide: Unwiesnable Haste
My early match report (14:50 into the last quarter)
After the first twenty minutes of this moderately attended opening fixture, a persistent Port Adelaide made an over-confident Melbourne look like a “legal mixture of custard and butter”@thefootyalmanac #AFLDeesPort

Not willing to risk the vagaries of after-the-siren train replacement buses with a Crows game to get home to, I filed this Eddie Hocking-sized match report just before I flew out of the Ponsford Stand towards the 64a tram stop.
I need not have rushed.

Brilliant Swish. “A legal mixture of custard and butter?” What then would Margaret Fulton have made of the Crows?

Mickey, I’m guessing that the Kurt Tippett Memorial Test Kitchen over at Balfours is working on a commemorative tri-coloured snot block as we speak. Looking back on the preseason Crows-GWS fixture, the danger of reading too much into the JLT-leaves is evident.

I know how you feel Swish. Adam Simpson’s use of Tom “Plain Flour” Hickey in Brisbane produced a very flat result. Port stole our Scott “Self Raising” Lycett and his double team with Paddy Ryder was central to their hi-top finish. Hope we find some bi-carb in the back of the cupboard on the weekend so we can raise the flag. Last year’s cake is looking stale by now.
It would appear Port will take a power of stopping this season. Likewise Melbourne appears to have GAWN missing. Across town, let’s hope for a better showing from the PYKERS.next match otherwise they can eat cake (Vili’s not Balfours)
Melbourne did not even trouble the scorers in the final quarter on a perfect day for footy.
Feeble from the Demons?
And they criticise womens’ footy?
Thanks PB, Fisho and Smokie.
Port looked gone for all money deep into the first quarter, then the home side went missing, apart from the flurry of goals at the start of the third, which I missed while I was traversing the secret gangway between the Olympic and Ponsford Stands.
It must be tough following the Dees.
Dee’s supporters were expecting a GOOD WIN from their team, but it just wasn’t to be. With all the upsets last week, it will be most interesting to see watch happens this weekend. Let’s hope there will be more goals scored. Even with the new rules, the matches were mostly too defensive.
Beautifully summed up.
