Riverland Superdogs bite back

By Nick Kossatch

The return of key players Ben Meuret, Peter Hoffmann, Sam Ingerson and Brenton Fenwick to the Riverland Superdogs’ outfit helped it to an impressive 54-point victory against quality side Easts at Lyrup on Sunday.

The first quarter was even and if not for ruckman-cum-forward Peter Hoffmann, who missed the last game against Gawler through injury, with two first term goals – the hosts could have been behind.

Instead it increased its lead at every break with Kenny Karpany putting on a clinic with ball-handling wizadry in the centre square combining wonderfully well with ruckmen Shaun Harris and Hoffmann.

Karpany dummied his way to a pair of goals whilst Shane Hannagan was Buddy Franklin-esque with several sprays which failed to split the uprights. ‘Hanno’ finished with seven points but otherwise continued his superb form.

Club President Lance Gum helped out the Easts team as a ‘fill in’ but was still of nuisance value for the Superdog defenders. Gum kicked a terrific first-quarter major to keep it in it.

Hard-nut Peter Aston sacrificed his ‘Adam’s Apple’ after copping yet another hit to help set up a goal at the other end of the ground to Hoffmann. Son-of-a-gun Ben Meuret returned from Roxby Downs as a ‘fly-in, fly-out’ employee to dominate across half back and in the middle.

The Dogs’ defence was as tight as the richest women in Australia with Ingerson and other key backs on top before Ingerson booted three goals after demanding to injured coach Shane Healy to go forward during the three quarter time break.

Matthew Clifford played a great game in the forward lines receiving many bullet-like passes from Karpany but Darren Tieste was almost cut in half from a Karpany spearing pass and the ball bounced off ‘Titty’s’ chest as though it was made of rubber.

The Hills team go to Lyrup on Sunday 15th July at Lyrup Oval from 1pm in what should be a close and hard-fought encounter and the Riverland side will be keen to string a second successive win.
