Opening Round – Brisbane Lions v Western Bulldogs: Inspired Dogs rattle the Lions cage to seal opening round thriller

The Western Bulldogs have produced a stunning seven-goal final term to upset the two-time premiers Brisbane at the Gabba by five points on Saturday night.

The Dogs were on the ropes late in the third quarter, however Bevo’s men rallied winning 16.15 (111) to 15.16 (106).

It was the Bulldogs attacking prowess that overpowered the reigning premiers, led by superstar midfielder Ed Richards, producing two goals, 30 disposals and 16 score involvements to stake his claims as one of the league’s best in 2026.

It was a thrilling intensity from start to finish, however in stunning fashion it was the Dogs senior brigade who left the Lions reeling.

Skipper Marcus Bontempelli was moved forward and produced a game-high three goals while experienced midfielder Matthew Kennedy (30 disposals) provided hardness in the contest, bringing an intensity against the star-studded Lions engine room.

Connor Budarick produced an eye-catching club debut for the Dogs, (27 disposals, eight score involvements), while Rory Lobb stood tall in defence in his 200th game.

It was the home side that looked to be too dynamic for the Dogs on some occasions, with their 63 inside 50s not enough to get over the line.

Despite Lachie Neale’s efforts (39 disposals), the loss of Hugh McCluggage to a calf injury early in the piece proved costly. Charlie Cameron continued his strong pre-season form kicking four goals in the loss as a positive for Chris Fagan’s men.

The loss came with a sour taste as co-captain Harris Andrews could find himself in hot water following a stray elbow that concussed young Bulldog, Arthur Jones.

The first-half arm wrestle appeared to be swaying in the Lions’ favor in the third quarter as they extended their lead to 26 points, as Kai Lohmann sparked the crowd with two of his own.

The Dogs however were not going to be denied as Bailey Williams ignited the spark late in the third quarter with an early goal of the year contender, as the Dogs got on a run in a devastating 20 minutes of football.

A hard running effort from Tim English late in the game getting on the end of a delightful Richards assist gave Bevo’s men the ultimate say, producing the upset of the round.

The triumphant win was the ideal start for Beveridge as he enters his twelfth season at the helm as his Doggies stare down difficult opening fixtures, while the Lions will be made to lick their wounds following the brutal contest.

  5. Kristian they didn’t give in. The boys stayed calm and concentrated, which is not what I feel in the past has been one of their strengths. Is it a maturity in their approach? Bevo is calm. Your writing isn’t verbose just considered which is wonderful. Please continue combining your passions of writing and the great game for our pleasure.
