NRL Round 24 – Rabbit in the Vineyard: The suffering is almost over!

Round 24
Wests Tigers v South Sydney
Campbelltown, Saturday 17 August, 7:30pm

17th v 15th

Prop in the Canefield accurately described the interest level in this bottom of the table clash as minimal. The game certainly will not be part of any ‘best of’ compilations for either club. The Olympics may have wrapped up in Paris, however in this part of the world, there was a big Saturday night game at ‘the Oval’ – the showdown between the Crows and Port Adelaide. I may have snuck a score check over on Fox Footy several times, as Souths slumped to their 14th loss of the season.

In the lead-up to the game, Latrell still managed to be the headline, despite not having played since Round 18.

Ironically, two of the last placed Tigers’ best players on the night, the evergreen Api Koroisau and Lebanon international Adam Doueihi, both spent time at Redfern. Koroisau was Souths’ hooker in the 2014 premiership team, replacing the suspended Isaac Luke. Doueihi, whose father is a cousin to rugby union identity Michael Cheika, played his last game for Souths in the 2019 Preliminary Final loss in Canberra. Adam joined the Tigers to make way for … that’s right, the player currently on leave until the end of the season, Latrell.

Souths defence was again questionable, allowing the Tigers to build a handy lead at half-time.

The game ended with some excitement – the Souths coaching box thought an unlikely win had been conjured, however the ‘try’ to Moale was not awarded due to a forward pass.

The Clive Churchill-George Piggins-Sam Burgess inspirational player:

The Captain, Cameron Murray. Once again, the captain played himself to a standstill.

The Phil Blake chip n chase best attacking moment:

Rookie fullback Jye Gray’s try. Gray has been a shining light in a beaten side.

The Rampling Brothers-Les Davidson-Ian Roberts tackler of the match:

Once again, the young prop, Davvy Moale. Davvy has certainly stepped up during the season.

FULL TIME: Wests Tigers 18 d South Sydney 16.

Souths team sheet: Gray, Myers, Milne, Kennar, Gagai, Wighton, Cody, Moale, Cook, Keppie. Koloamatangi, Duncan, Murray (capt.) bench: Mamouzelos, Host, Burgess, Burgess, S Mitchell.

    It was a fine drop!

    Two more games …

This Friday, I will be at the Marananga Wine Show, as ‘we’ try to keep Penrith under 50.

I had $375 seats for the 2021 GF, on the 40m line, at Lang Park. Cody’s pass to Critchon happened right in front of me. I will NEVER build a bridge over that two-point loss … Where was Latrell? suspended

Last round v Easts – I have a ‘first Friday night of the month’ Church commitment –

So, I won’t see Souths play live again this season – won’t be missing much!!
