full moon Leon in every passage
a forward thrust
as far as Tarrant’s fist
and no further
six points
such cheap reward
for Wellingham’s goal
buds begin to flower —
Fasolo plucks one
from the pack
tucked under his arm —
Daisy carries the cheers
the length of the wing
deep in time-on
only Pendlebury
with time to spare
empty beer cups
defenders tripping over
themselves
stars fill the sky…
here under the roof
we have Leon

About rob scott
Rob Scott (aka Haiku Bob) is a peripatetic haiku poet who calls Victoria Park home. He writes haiku in between teaching whisky and drinking English, or something like that.
Neon Leon is being very shrewd at the moment – obviously negotiating a new contract and comes out with the “I might not play nest year” line. Best bit of play he’s made under pressure for years.
he was very good the other night dips, great in patches, and if not for his occasional showboating (which is still a worry) would have been one of the finer performances i’ve seen in the black and white. still developing the art of the rebounding defender – getting used to finding the ball a lot, and using it wisely each time. his transformation has been a joy to watch, but it’s all about september (& hopefully october) for him.
I’m hoping for a fairytale ending for Leon. Hate the way the small forwards are maligned in our great game. It’s a wonder they score at all with the flooding & press.
Picture this…..20 minute mark of last qtr in GF. Pies up by 41 points. Leon wins another contested possession across half back, gives and goes. Gets it back 55m from goal, sells some candy & let’s fly for the icing on the cake goal. His mates come from everywhere & a super talented, creative footballer gets his reward.
BTW Haiku ….. just love reading your words. Great imagery!
Like Leon, it’s all in the gaps.
you almost got your wish in GF1 last year bakes!
Bakes – you’ve been watching too many U12 Grand Finals lately!!
