Collingwood for the 2015 flag: tonight you belong to me

I know (I know)
You belong to somebody new
But tonight you belong to me.

– Tonight You Belong To me, composed by Lee David 1926

Ahh, yes.
Picture it.
June. Collingwood 8-3.
Avant-garde Collingwood.
Facing Fremantle, Sydney, Hawthorn, Barcelona in the next month.
Media: “They’ve beaten nobody yet
(Note: there’s a reason all those sides are beneath us (Shhh: we beat them)).

“Unexpectedly” Collingwood win most of them.
Young fellas attacking the contest.
Crashing in.
Going and going again.
And again.
Media: “Underdogs win. Favourites didn’t play well. Collingwood have peaked too early. Young teams never last.

Picture it.
Collingwood keep winning.
Win.
Win and win.
Lose a couple.
But well placed for double chance.

Picture it.
It’s September.
Media: “A learning year. They’ll be back next year. Big bodies win finals.
But lo, Collingwood win the first final (away).
Set up a home Preliminary Final.
Media: “Pies over-achieved this year. Will be found out now by experienced side.”
Collingwood wins.

Picture it.
Collingwood into Grand Final.
Media: “You need to lose one to win one. Collingwood not a hope. Finals experience counts.
But Collingwood attack the contest.
Crash in.
Go and go again.
And again.
And win.

Picture it.
2015 – Year of the Magpie
We can win this.

“Way down by the stream
How sweet it will seem
Once more just to dream
In the moonlight…”

    Collingwood beat North.
    That was big…
Having to win five more games from 11 to play finals is a nice position to be in.
For Collingwood, it’ll be how high?
Remember though, Collingwood was fourth after round 12 last year.
By round 18 they dropped out of the eight…
They do look better this year, though.

  2. Luke Reynolds says

Nice Dave. Anything is possible. Loving Collingwood’s journey so far this season. As the first half of the season has shown, anyone can be beaten.
    Go Pies.

  3. E.regnans says

It just makes sense, Matt, Luke.
    Reading the leaves…
    It fits.

  4. Earl O'Neill says

You might have had me, but for the song.
4&20s are well worth rating and I suspect that a bolter from nowhere might pinch a flag this year.

  5. Malcolm Ashwood says

Nothing wrong with dreaming OBP while I am in the camp of not big enough bodies and to young yet what I like about the pies is they have drafted and traded aiming to have a crack at the holy grail unlike other clubs aiming to be compeditive( how Grundy slipped so low in the draft the tigers in particular recruiting should be shot).Scharenberg and Freeman are important in the jigsaw and you are still a huge chance to land a big name re next year

  6. Goodness me, does the optimism(delusion) of the Magpie hordes know no limit ? For many years they were the March champions, now it appears the title of June premiers is about to be bestowed on them. One can only await the finals with bated breath.

    Glen!

earl. the fact of 1926 composition gave that one the nod. 4&20s went on to win 1927, 28, 29, 30. Courtney Barnett nearly snuck in with her:
    “I’m saying definitely maybe.
    You’re saying probably no…”
from her ‘nobody really cares if you don’t go to the party’

obp – fair & responsible & knowledgeable & logical, as usual.
    But… you never know.

Glen – Beauty. In an infinite universe, does everything that’s possible have to happen somewhere?

  8. That’s it, the lid is OFF!

AND… the Pies haven’t won a September GF since Methuselah was an Auskicker. 2015 Grand Final date? October 3rd.

just sayin’… (and have invested accordingly)

  10. Love your work Mr E. The FIXture has certainly helped the Pies. The next month will tell a lot. But if they win the flag I’ll run down Bourke Street in my jocks, in a stooped position.

  11. Dips, that might be like one of Lou Richards famous promises, where he was forced to undertake the ludicrous task he proffered up. Touch wood it doesn’t happen.

    Glen!

  12. Glen – no chance. I’m very relaxed.

  13. Rick Kane says

    Dear Mr E. r.,

I do commend your verve. Obviously they’re on a hiding to nothing so good onya for playing the card that dare not be played so (sooooooo) early. I do hope you have songs in reserve (and only if it happens) for the fall. Here are a couple to get you started. My head hurts, my feet stink and I don’t love Jesus by Jimmy Buffett or It’s All Going To Pot by Mr Willie Nelson.

    Cheers

  14. E.regnans says

    i love that song
