Almanac supporter Marcus Spiller recently discovered this gem of a photo dating back to 1965 at Princes Park, when as a young Italian-Australian growing up in North Carlton, he spent many a weekend playing footy and dreaming of bigger things.
Asked about this shot, and in particular the soccer ball, Marcus recalls “Looking at that photo, I still have a vivid memory of how I felt. The funny thing is I had no sense that it was odd to have the Carlton footy jumper on whilst playing soccer! It was just about sport and belonging”.
No doubt there’s a tonne or more of similar memories amongst the Almanac community, captured in shots like this, forever.

Just a short, sharp, wonderful little piece. That picture just says so much about Carlton the suburb & football club. Love it
Thanks very much John. The obvious pride in and love for the jumper strikes me. Cheers
That was the Carlton of the 60s and 70s.
I started at Melb Uni in 1981 and it was pretty much still like that, but already starting to dissipate a bit, different restaurants starting to move in, etc.
I remember going to watch Carlton vs Footscray at Princes Park in 1982, just as Italy was making its run to a famous World Cup victory, and during the breaks there was plenty of world cup talk amongst the young Italian-Australians in the crowd (mostly supporting Carlton).
