Almanac WAFL: Top four power on

WAFL Round 5

It remains tight in the WAFL but it’s beginning to look like six teams (well five) will be jostling for the final finals spot.

Peel fielded 13 Fremantle listed players but were no match for South Fremantle at Fremantle Oval. Jake Florenca, Brendon Ah Chee and Haiden Schloithe controlled the midfield to such an extent that Peel’s well-credentialed forward line barely saw the ball in the first half. Hamish Free had the better of Lloyd Meek in the ruck and Toby McQuilkin was dynamic in defence. Cam McCarthy played for the Bulldogs and looked in better condition than when he had a go last year.

Darcy Tucker, who showed some nifty evasive skills, was the best for Peel, Matthew Johnson looked ok in his first game of the year and Sam Sturt kicked three goals. Ty Anderson didn’t do much but he’s very quick and kicked a great running goal.

West Perth took advantage of the percentage boost offered by West Coast and headed to the top of the ladder. The Eagles kicked four goals in the last quarter.

Milan Murdock was the star for East Fremantle in a comprehensive victory over Perth.

Claremont didn’t kick a goal in the first quarter against East Perth but got seven in the second on the way to a big victory.

In the game in Kalgoorlie Swan Districts led by 20 points at three quarter time, didn’t score in the last quarter and lost to the ‘locals’ Subiaco by 14 points. Former Railways player Ryan Borchet enjoyed being back at his home ground and kicked four goals.

West Perth 17.17 (119) West Coast 6.3 (39)

East Fremantle 13.20 (98) Perth 10.12 (72)

South Fremantle 13.11 (89) Peel 9.9 (63)

Claremont 14.13 (97) East Perth 7.8 (50)

Subiaco 12.10 (82) Swan Districts 10.8 (68)

The ladder: West Perth 16; East Fremantle 16; Claremont 16; South Fremantle 12; Peel 8; East Perth 8; Swan Districts 8; Subiaco 8; Perth 8; West Coast 0.

Round 6: East Fremantle vs Subiaco; West Perth vs Perth; Swan Districts vs South Fremantle; East Perth vs West Coast; Peel vs Claremont.
