Almanac WAFL – Round 10: Just What We Needed and a Flag For The Tigers

 

 

WAFL Round 10

Round 10 delivered a nice set of results and the WAFL ladder tightened going into the last weekend’s bye.

I didn’t get to a game but was able to watch East Perth upset Claremont in a thrilling finish at the WACA on the very useful live streaming service. 

The Royals led by Angus Schumacher and Hamish Brayshaw, saw a rock-solid defence line surprising most with their powerful win over the Tigers. Christian Ameduri kicked three goals and the black and blues kept the five in view.

East Fremantle celebrated captain Matthew Jupp’s 150th game and moved to second on the ladder by beating Peel by 11 points. Midfielders Blaine Boekhurst and Milan Murdock maintained their excellent form. An extraordinary goal on the final siren by Peel speedster Ty Anderson would have been one of the highlights of the season if the game situation was different.

 

 

West Coast recorded their first win of the season with Nic Naitanui kicking two goals on his return to footy. The Eagles now have a real chance of avoiding the wooden spoon – Perth went down by 61 points to West Perth and are out of form and players.

Swan Districts have had some close ones this year – their 51-point win over Subiaco was a clear statement.

The WAFLW Grand Final on Saturday was a beauty. Claremont beat the previously unbeaten East Fremantle by eight points. Former Docker Jasmine Stewart won the Lou Knitter Medal as best-on-ground, Rachel Ortlepp kicked three goals and recently drafted Mikayla Western (WCE) and Madeleine Scanlon (Freo) both performed well. Laura Catherine towered above her ruck opposition and kicked three goals, Sharon Wong worked hard and the tiny Zipporah Fish showed signs of exciting things to come.
